As I’ve babbled previously, this winter has been a *real* winter. A fair deal of snow, lots of cold. Last winter was warm and dry; summer was *hot* and dry. As a consequence, the plants that grow in the mountains and provide winter food for the critters were pretty badly stunted. As a consequence of *that,*critters are going further afield and changing their strategies.

Around here deer pop up from time to time, but you hardly ever see them in daytime. But this winter they’ve been bolder than usual, and are shoplifting hay meant for horses… including the hay in my back yard. If only there was a way to commercialize deer poop, I’d have it made.

FIP cannot be ruled out, but the vet *tentatively* doesn’t think that’s the issue. What *is* this issue is that Marvin, pretty much like any politician ever, is entirely full of crap:

This would be that “Megacolon” thing, a likely response to malnutrition. Even though she now has regular access to food, her body doesn’t know that, and is holding on to every last calorie for as long as possible.

The wobbliness is unexplained by that, however, so she *may* still have FIP. So for the time being she is to be quarantined from the other cats (who are all about due for their annual shots, so they get to get the FIP vaccination).

Note that her right ear is now a little stubbier than in prior photos.

Dropped her off this AM.

1) The frostbit tip of her ear came off.

2) Her surgery wounds are somewhat infected, so got cleaned and more antibiotics

3) It looks like the mammary tumors weren’t all cleaned out, and are roaring back with a vengeance

4) And as visible in previous photos, she’s got a big belly.

As for #4, there are two possibilities the vet suggests: “Megacolon,” which is just what it sounds like; she’s just full’o’crap. A result of malnutrition, will go away in time.

The other possibility goes along with her wobbliness. She was found to *not* have an inner ear infection, so the wobblies would seem to be neurological. One diagnosis that couples the big belly with the wobblies is feline infectious periontitis. Let me quote Wiki: Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a usually fatal, incurable disease that affects cats.

Umm.

This would of course be a very, very bad diagnosis; the only response is to make the remaining time – which is short – as comfortable as possible. But it’s transmissible from cat to cat; so Marvin would need to be physically, and permanently, separated from the others. Realistically, if Marvin has FIP, there is but one course of action: euthenasia.

The difficulty is that there’s no cheap or even definitive test for FIP; stuff like PCR DNA tests and the like. So right now she’s still at the vet to get more X-rays, hopefully to differentiate the big belly…. it’s either fluid or poop. Poop would be good. Fluid would be bad.

Couple this with the resurgence of the tumors… I’ve got an uncomfortableness.

First up: here’s one more reason to oppose firearms registration…

In January, the Mexico Permanent Commission reportedly voted to formally ask the United States Senate for a registry of all commercialized firearms in the border states of California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas.

Yeah, that’d be great.

And then, Incredibly Important Journalism from across the pond (or from Hollywood… either is equally far away from the US):

Spencer Pratt, Heidi Montag Say Guns Make Them ‘Proud To Be American’

I don’t know who these two are. But the important thing to note from the article:

America’s Sweethearts, who appeared on the latest season of Britain’s “Celebrity Big Brother,” reveal their arsenal of more than six firearms, including a sniper rifle and semi-automatic shotgun.

Two people, seven guns. “Arsenal.”

I’m taking her back in tomorrow. She seems to be unwell, wobblier than ever, less enthusiasm than just a day or two ago and her surgery wounds… well, they’re starting to stink. None of this is good. Hopefully a minor infection that can be easily cleaned up, and I want to get her checked for an inner ear infection for the wobbliness. I’ve just got an uncomfortable feeling.

Here’s the latest impressive automobile that you can’t afford:

This Is Volkswagen’s Crazy Awesome 261 MPG Car

Not a terribly practical car: seats only two, *no* rearward vision, extremely limited luggage space, built like a carbon fiber bubble. But the performance is good. The car was probably optimized for mileage; you have to wonder how it would do if it was practicalized.

I’ve only rarely heard the Emergency Broadcast System used for anything but tests (a few times it was used for weather alerts, such as tornados). It has never been used for what it was really meant for… telling people that the nukes were on their way. But it seems it was accidentally used for just that, in 1971. An interesting tale:

A recording exists of radio station WOWO in Fort Wayne, Indiana, dealing with this escapade:
