ACORN and two former employees of its Baltimore office filed a multimillion-dollar lawsuit Wednesday against the makers of a hidden-camera video that showed the employees giving tax advice to a man posing as a pimp and a woman posing as a prostitute.

The liberal activist group contends that the audio portion of the video was obtained illegally because Maryland law requires the consent of both parties to record private conversations.

The employees seen in the video, Tonja Thompson and Shera Williams, were fired after it was posted online. Thompson and Williams are plaintiffs in the lawsuit, which says they suffered “extreme emotional distress with attendant physical symptoms and injury to their reputations.”

Yeah, uh-huh. Just remember, ACORN… “discovery” is a mofo. You bring a lawsuit like this, you open the door form the opponents lawyers to come in and ream you up one side and down the other. If you have *any* dirty laundry, they will find it and hang it out for all the world to see.

So, who here thinks that ACORN has nothing to hide?

Well, this is a tad creepifyin’:

Inside the Apocalyptic Soviet Doomsday Machine

Yarynich is talking about Russia’s doomsday machine. That’s right, an actual doomsday device-a real, functioning version of the ultimate weapon, always presumed to exist only as a fantasy of apocalypse-obsessed science fiction writers and paranoid über-hawks. The thing that historian Lewis Mumford called “the central symbol of this scientifically organized nightmare of mass extermination.” Turns out Yarynich, a 30-year veteran of the Soviet Strategic Rocket Forces and Soviet General Staff, helped build one.

The point of the system, he explains, was to guarantee an automatic Soviet response to an American nuclear strike. Even if the US crippled the USSR with a surprise attack, the Soviets could still hit back. It wouldn’t matter if the US blew up the Kremlin, took out the defense ministry, severed the communications network, and killed everyone with stars on their shoulders. Ground-based sensors would detect that a devastating blow had been struck and a counterattack would be launched.

The technical name was Perimeter, but some called it Mertvaya Ruka, or Dead Hand. It was built 25 years ago and remained a closely guarded secret. With the demise of the USSR, word of the system did leak out, but few people seemed to notice. In fact, though Yarynich and a former Minuteman launch officer named Bruce Blair have been writing about Perimeter since 1993 in numerous books and newspaper articles, its existence has not penetrated the public mind or the corridors of power. The Russians still won’t discuss it, and Americans at the highest levels-including former top officials at the State Department and White House-say they’ve never heard of it. When I recently told former CIA director James Woolsey that the USSR had built a doomsday device, his eyes grew cold. “I hope to God the Soviets were more sensible than that.” They weren’t.

It was a technically clever system that would launch retaliatory nuclear strikes in the event that nuclear detonations were detected in Soviet territory and communications with command and control were lost. But as a deterrent, it was useless, since the Soviets never told anyone they had it. And of course, it was an automated system, and sometimes such systems decide to, for example, fly Airbus jetliners into forests. So the future of life on Earth was put into the hands of a computer system built by Socialist slave laborers.

And here’s the good part: it’s still on.

Here are some fun sci-fi story ideas:

1) A comet or asteroid hits Russia, and as a result Dead Hand wipes out the rest of the planet.

2) Someone in the Russian military decides to go rogue, hijacks the Dead Hand system and convinces it to go off.

3) Some jackass teenage kid in the Pacific Northwest is hacking the web looking to download as-yet unreleased games, and comes across a Russian server hosting “Dead Hand: Global thermonuclear War” and decides to give it a try.

4) Skynet.

5) Some mid-80’s piece of electonic hardware decides to give out and explode, causing the system to go off.

6) The Iranians finally get nukes, and not only lob a nuke over the US, setting off an EMP that reduces the US to stone-age subsistence, they do the same to the Russians a few weeks later when the Russians try to become the big badass on the block now that the US is out of the picture. The EMP sets off Dead Hand. The last scene is the President of the US on his knees begging for his life saying something like “But I was the good guy! I was nice to them!” as his own Secret Service agents cap him… and then the Russian citybuster goes off in the yard outside.

7) The Chinese nuke the Russians, and as a result, the Russians nuke the US.

One of the first ‘modern” anti-aircraft rockets was the German “Wasserfall.” Designed by the same merry band of rocket scientists who created the V-2, the Wasserfall was essentially a scaled-down V-2 with a propellant change (storable hypergolics rather than cryogenic LOX) and cruciform stabilizers up front. Wasserfall (“Waterfall”) was designed to home in on radar beams reflected off of target aircraft… a system that proved quite popular for many decades after WWII, up to the present day.

One of the Space Drawings I’ve recently released is Zeichnung (Drawing) SKW 970 B, dated January 23, 1945, illustrating in detail one of the Wasserfall designs. You can see more on it here.

Kirk Cameron – former actor, current snake-oil salesman – has for some years been peddling a particularly offensive form of religion-based scientific denialism. One of his more famous “proofs” (given with some goober named “Roy Comfort”) of why evolution was wrong and Creationism was right was, and I kid you not, that the banana fits so perfectly in the human hand. And they are right… the banana *is* the result of “intelligent design.” But they are wrong in who they think that intelligent designer was…. it was actually mankind, with the help of some random and *recent* mutations.
But hey, what are “facts” to stand in the way of a cheesy propaganda campaign? Camerons latest stroke of genius has been to take the public domain book by Charles Darwin “The Origin of Species” and re-publish it with a 50-page introduction. This intro trots out the hoary old Creationist chestnuts, like linking Darwin to Hitler… always good for a laugh given that Hitler was himself a “creationist.”

But hey, why read me yammering on about this, when you can watch a video of a hot chick with a hot accent tearing Cameron and his nonsense to shreds?

Around midnight a slightly shorter exposure, zoomed out further to get a wider view, shows this:

Five new Space Drawings have just been made available (see HERE). One of these drawing packages shows two North American Aviation conceptual designs for landers meant to transport astronauts to the surfaces of the asteroids Ceres or Vesta. One lander was designed for a crew of three, the other for a crew of ten. Both were designed for a 30-day stay time and to use FLOX/MMH propellants – very energetic with great energy density, but just about as toxic as physically possible.

Due to the long stay times, the vehicles – which were otherwise similar to the Lunar Excursion Module – were equipped with living quarters distinct and separate from the ascent module. The living quarters would be left behind when the ascent modules took off.

The three-man Planetary Excusion Module (PEM) had an estimated gross mass of 14,100 kilograms, the ten-man PEM massed 27,800 kilos. The 3-man PEM had a cylindrical living space behind the cramped ascent stage; the 10-man PEM used a hocky-puck-shaped living quarters atop the descent stage, essentially serving as a platform for the even more cramped ascent stage.

Ganymede and Mercury were other targets for this class of vehicle.

A cartoon from the May 27, 1925 Chicago Tribune.

Something control freaks have consistantly failed to understand for all of recorded history… if you ban something, that’s only going to make it more popular. Drugs, guns, firecrackers, booze, smokes, dirty pictures, wacky religions, scientific truth… doesn’t matter. As soon as it becomes official policy to expunge these things, people who previously would not have cared about them now become collectors.
