A few shots from the past few days. A quick note on the landscape images: if you think you have a handle on the scales involved… trust me, you almost certainly *don’t.*

Photos were taken at places like the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley (which I can now assure you can be an *extremely* creepy place to drive past well after sundown, with mostly cloudy skies largely hiding the moonlight, leaving giant black Things lurking against the faint gray night sky), Goosenecks, Moki Dugway, Natural Bridges and Hite.

And another question for the European contingent, especially Germans: what’s the attraction for Germans to north-east Arizona/south-east Utah?  I say this with no excaggeration… of the tourists I’ve encountered and heard speak, more than 50%  were speaking German. Meaning that it seems like there are more Germans about than Americans. Was there some big advertising blitz for the Grand Canyon in Germany recently? I’ve heard French, British accents, Slavic languages (Russian, etc.) and whatnot, but German is *everywhere.* This evening my motel is located almost exactly in the middle of No and Where, hundreds of miles from the Big Attractions… and the next door neighbors are Germans.

I go away for a little while, and people go bonkers. Behold these two news stories that occured in rapid succession:

1) Someone shoots abortion doctor George Tiller in his own church in Kansas.
2) Muslim convert shoots up an Army/Navy recruitment center in Arkansas, killing one.

One of these stories is getting a lot of national blather. The other, not so much. Now, for all intents and purposes, they are the same story: an American uses his religion as an excuse to go and murder someone who is comitting no crime. But in one of these stories,  the killer is the sort of stereotype that left-wingers like to yammer on about (anti-abortion, probably “gun nut”); in the other story, the killer is the type that the left prefers to not yammer on about (a convert to the Religion Of Peace), and even supprt (opposed to “the war”). Go on and guess which story will get more coverage.

The first “Unwanted Blog Identify This Aircraft Contest” to go without a winner had the June, 1943, design for a tanker aircraft by Consolidated Vultee as the subject. This aircraft, while similar in layout to the P-38, was an entirely different beast. A wing span of 94 feet and two P&W R-1830-C9G engines of 1250 BHP each would allow the plane to carry a useful load of up to 21,720 lbs (3620 gallons) of fuel to be transferred in flight to other aircraft, such as long range B-24 bombers. Cruising – and fueling – altitude would be 2,000 feet.
The same aircraft could be reconfigured into a bulk cargo carrier with a “Pack Plane” style pod under the center section, or could carry five 4,200 pound bombs or six 3,400 pound torpedos.

The near-ish future may see an expanded article in APR on this craft.
