Some videos of interest. First: Ukrainian auto mechanics are busy at work converting captured heavy machine guns from Russian armored vehicles into hand-held weapons to turn back onto the Russians:

Second, a video showing trashed Russian vehicles. *Lots* of trashed Russian vehicles. Turns out lining up your vehicles on roads is sometimes a terminally bad idea. And a lot of armored vehicles in a town, destroyed or abandoned.

And a tank battle in an urban environment without infantry support. The tank you see here is close enough to the cameraman that he could’ve just *walked* up to it and poured napalm onto it. If he’d had *any* sort of rocket propelled grenade or LAW he could have shot from the hip and bullseye’d that tank and turned it into a pyre. One wonders if the video cut off when it did because he reached for his handy anti-tank weapon for an *easy* kill.

I know a lot of people think that Putin is playing some 4D chess thing here, leading the Ukrainians into a false sense of hope. Well, maybe…  but if so, he’s taking his sweet time on springing the trap and in the mean time he’s squandering a hell of a lot of Russian lives with *stupid* tactics.  One would think that if these sort of videos were widely disseminated among the Russian populace, they’d be pissed off enough to actually do something. It would surprise me exactly none at all if the Russian military has lost more soldiers in the last two weeks in Ukraine than the United States military lost in Iraq and Afghanistan in the last twenty years.

A quote has been floating around for a while, attributed to Voltaire: “Those Who Can Make You Believe Absurdities Can Make You Commit Atrocities.” Like a lot of pithy quotes attributed to historical figures, it’s close, but not quite right. The original line in French is:

“Certainement qui est en droit de vous rendre absurde, est en droit de vous rendre injuste.”

This was in “Collection des lettres sur les miracles” published in 1767, available to view on Google Books.  Google Translate renders the line as:

“Certainly who has the right to make you absurd has the right to make you unjust.”

Close, but not exactly the same. But the meaning is probably pretty much spot-on. A history of the quote and it’s slow mutation is HERE. Why do I bring it up now? Well, seems relevant on a number of fronts:

1) If you as a Russian soldier believe Putins nonsense about Ukraine developing bioweapons to wipe out the Russian people, he can get you to wipe out the nation of Ukraine.

2) If you can be made to believe that a .223 is a “high power rifle” round, or that a standard capacity magazine is  “high capacity magazine,” or that rifles in any way pose some terrible threat to society, then you can be made to support laws that empower tyrants, imprison regular folks and embolden violent criminals.

3) If you as a Star trek fan can be made to believe that Michael Burnham is a good character, that Star Trek Discovery is a well-written show, then you can be made to believe that Star Trek is garbage (see also Ghostbusters 2016, Disney Star Wars, and the forthcoming Amazon “Lord of the Rings” fan fiction), and accept garbage shows with garbage messages as quality worth emulating.

4) If you as an English person can be made to believe the England has always been highly multi-ethnic, or if you as a Scandianvian person can be made to believe that the Vikings/Norse were populated with Africans and that Jarl Haakon was a black woman, or if you as an American can be made to believe that Westerns have nothing to teach us but that Americans are awful people, then you can be made to tear your own cultures down and replace them with… what?

The less said about “Drag Queen Story Hour,” the better… and yet, wholly relevant to this quote.

The hope among many is that the sanctions on Russia will cause the Russian people, or business class, or military, or *somebody* to pull their thumbs out and give Putin the boot. And it’s starting to look like those sanctions are really making a mess of sizable chunks of the Russian economy and daily life. but… as has been noted here and elsewhere, many, MANY times… Russians are kinda used to trouble. No boom today. boom tomorrow. Always boom tomorrow. Consequently, if the Russian government can adequately spin this mess as being the fault of EEEEVIL westerners, rather than their our bad behavior, chances are pretty good that the Russian people will simply muddle through as they’ve always done. The effects of sanctions are hardly likely to make things worse in Russia than they were during the Soviet years, at leas after the initial confusion settles down, and Russians lived under communism for 70 years without overthrowing their dictators.

Some relevant videos on the subject. The first one is the source of the title of the post:

The next one, if the translation is to be believed (I don’t speak Russian beyond “blyat” and “suka,” so for all I know they’re actually debating the merits of Cardi B vs. Justin Bieber), is some rather brave soul doing vox pop in Russia, showing locals photos of the attacks in Ukraine. A distressing number think – or at least express – that Putin is doing the right thing. Disturbing that the dangerhaired girl is on the side of right and reason here…

Both the Right and Left Have Illiberal Factions. Which Is More Dangerous?

Starting off, they determine that the audience for “far right” content online is vastly greater than “far left:”

In terms of audience size, Hard Core Right illiberal sites averaged about 186 million visits monthly. That’s about 31 percent the size of the audience for sites representing the mainstream Right and 19 percent the size of the audience of mainstream Left sites. … Unlike the Hard Core Right illiberal sites, the audience for Left illiberal sites is miniscule. Left illiberal sites received a monthly average of about 2.5 million visits.

Which is about 1.3 percent the size of the Hard Core Right illiberal audience.

Let’s just assume for the sake of argument that their data is accurate, *and* that the size of the far right vs. far left can be accurately assessed based on the visits to public and clearly acknowledged extremist websites. Based on that, their judgement is that the far right is something like 76 times bigger/more dangerous than the far left. Their final conclusion:

Those of us who seek to conserve and defend American liberalism should act accordingly, which involves recognizing that the illiberal threat comes overwhelmingly from the right.

The threat comes “overwhelmingly from the right.”

Uh-huh.

Look at the last couple of years. The left can point to one single “riot” by right wingers that largely involved people milling about harmlessly in the halls of power, with a vanishingly small number of knuckleheads busting windows and acting the fool. But on the other hand… the left gave us summers of cities in flames, cops assassinated, Trump supporters ambushed and murdered, cities occupied, books burned, death, destruction, fire and filth.

If there are fifty times more far right types than far left, but the far left actually carries out fifty times more actual violence, doesn’t mean that the lefties are 2,500 times more dangerous per capita? Couple that with this:

No, antifa didn’t ‘infiltrate’ Black Lives Matter during the 2020 protests. But did it increase violence?

The summary *here* is that Antifa showing up is a clear indicator that a protest is going to involve violence, destruction, arrests and injuries… while far right groups showing up statistically does nothing to make a protest more or less violent. It’s almost like people visiting “far right” websites doesn’t actually say anything about whether or not they’re going to be actually violent. I’m reminded of all the moral panics about how Dungeons and Dragons is going to make kids into Satan worshippers, and how video games will make kids into violent psychopaths. Rather than basing the level of threat on what people read, how about basing it on what they *do*?

Plus, their methodology may well not be very good. Do their “far left” websites include Facebook and Twitter? The far right (the *real* far right) has to go to Daily Stormer and such because they’ll get kicked off FB and Twitter and the like. The far left, on the other hand, is welcome there.

There are two possibilities with a story like this:

1) Someone who *used* to be popular and successful, looking to gin up some controversy as a hail Mary pass at returning to the spotlight

2) She’d bugnuts.

Susan Sarandon shares post comparing NYPD funeral turnout to ‘fascism’ in latest example of anti-cop vitriol

Specifically:

I can’t imagine that comparing police at a funeral for other officers who were assassinated is going to do a whole lot for Ms. Sarandon’s career.

Here’s a hint for Hollywood types who get the sudden urge to slander or libel good people:

The world can usually be approximated to adequate accuracy with a small number of generally simply equations. Go this fast off a ramp at that angle, you will get so high, and land at such a distance. Easy. *Precise* trajectory can be calculated with more inputs… drag calculations, usually, adjustments for wind, that sort of thing. But for first approximations, the math is pretty easy.

Life is hard when you choose not to do the math.

Feel free to either wince or laugh. Either’s good. Both are good.

Shockingly, the guy didn’t die. At least not that time. But he did learn an important lesson: not doing the math *and* not having insurance? Why, that adds up to a million dollars in medical bills.

But his record seems to indicate a lack of foresight. A prior set of “stunts” that resulted in… well, reality, good and hard.

Here’s your “dumbest news story of the day:”

Waterstones apologises after award-winning author Owusu asked for ID

The short form: an author wanders into a bookstore (“Waterstones”) and asks the staff on hand if he can sign a couple of his books sitting on the shelf. The staff asks him for his ID to make sure it’s actually him. THAT’S IT. That’s the outrage. Waterstones has issued a groveling apology for their staff having the temerity, the gall, the outright *racism* to try to make sure that some rando who wandered in the door isn’t going to just scribble all over some books and ruin them.

As I’m sure I’ve made abundantly clear, I’ve had a book of  mine on the shelves at Barnes & Noble. It was kind of a thrill the first time I saw them sitting there (rather less of a thrill when I saw them still sitting there months later… sigh…). But it did not occur to me to just start scrawling in them. And now that the idea has been brought to my attention, if I *did* decided to enscribble books on a shelf I’d *want* the staff to make sure I am who I say I am.

a spokesperson for Waterstones said: “We are incredulous and dismayed that any bookseller would ask an author for their ID when they have offered to sign their books. Of course, rogue individuals will, from time to time, want to sign books of which they are not the author. Any sensible bookseller can discretely and easily compare the author photo – present on almost every book – and, if there is an obvious mismatch, make a joke of it.”

Make a joke of it? For frak’s sake. Not every author is JK Rowling, with a bagrillion copies of their books on the shelves. Some of us have books printed in numbers that are relatively tiny, and having even a few ruined is kinda painful to contemplate. And no, there are no photos of me in or on “SR-71,” B-47/B-52,” or probably *any* book that may come down the line. Ain’t nobody need to know what I look like (is your life better knowing what Steven King looks like? Does it make the experience of reading “Cujo” better?). But if I go into a place of business to mark up the merchandise, I’d *want* them to check on things like ID.

– – –

Which reminds me. This is hardly the only news story of late regarding morons getting PO’ed about the idea of being asked to show their ID. the current decrepit President of the United States has been telling some whoppers lately to rile up the ignoratti about how terrible it is that they might need to prove that they are who they say they are before they vote:
