YouTube decided that I needed to see this trailer:

It’s yet another sportsball movie. Yawn. But the schtick here is that the sportsballers in question are college, not professional, and there is some movement afoot to get them paid and get them medical insurance. Because the sportsballers currently don’t get paid, while their coaches and other staff can have salaries measured in millions; and while the staff have careers lined up for potentially decades, most of the sportsballers *won’t* go on to become professionals.

Message: boo hoo poor college sportsballers who spend several years getting feted and fawned over and provided with enough cars and other gifts and whatnot that if they weren’t idiots they could fund a pretty decent post-college retirement even without moving on to professional sportsball.

However, my takeaway is this: stop funding college sportsball. Instead of giving the coach six million dollars a year, give that money to the nuclear engineering department. Give it to the college Chess Team or the RC Airplane team or the Liquid Propellant Rocket Racing To The Stratosphere team. Or the Medical department. Or the physics lab. Or the library, to keep actual books on actual stacks that the students can actually access. You know… what academics are *supposed* to be about.

If these people are worried about college sportsballers getting so injured that they’ll need medical insurance more than the average college student, then clearly sportsball is an unwarranted risk. Get rid of it, turn the stadiums into lab spaces (imagine what the Ag Science department could do with an average football field) and instead of football and basketball, focus Rah Rah Go Team instead onto the Chess team, the college Halo/Call of Duty/Donkey Kong team.

There. Problem solved.

Back before the yammering yahoos were forever going on about the need for “strong women characters,” pop culture was *full* of strong women characters. Star Trek: Voyager ended up kinda jam-packed with them… Janeway, Torres, Seven of Nine all ended up being well-written, well acted characters with distinct respectable personalities. Kes… meh, not so much. Modern live action Trek, sadly, has failed spectacularly in that regard, producing characters (both male and female) who run the short gamut from utterly forgettable to incredibly childish and annoying. Honestly: the bridge crew of the Discovery is *loaded* with women. How many of them do you even know the names of?

Janeway was a *proper* Starfleet captain: she commanded respect without having to berate people; she was emotionally affected by the things that happened around her and to her crew, but she was Captain enough to know when to keep it together. But then there’s “Michael Burnham.” Gah.

Burnham deserves no respect. Nor do the talentless hacks who write her.

The job of an actor is to look pretty and say words scripted for them. When they say their *own* words… you get crap like this;

‘What a fool’: fellow actors criticise William Shatner’s space flight

Appearing on The Jonathan Ross Show on ITV, Collins said: “It’s amazing isn’t it? What a fool. Who wants to do that? No, absolutely not. Did you see Bill Shatner?

“He was in the air and they were turning him upside down. Let’s take care of this planet first before we start going off.”

Asked if he would visit space, fellow show guest [Brian] Cox replied: “No, absolutely not. I think it’s ridiculous. I remember watching [Sir Richard] Branson and Bezos going up for their 11 minutes or whatever …

“No, we do not need more spaceships. We’ve got enough crap flying around up there. We do not need any more.”

Shut up, morons.

I have zero respect for people who rake in outsized buckets of cash for playing pretend, then get pissy that other people are spending *their* buckets of cash on things they don’t like. *Especially* when those things promote the general welfare of mankind.

Uuuuuuuuuuugh…

The video, politics aside, is just horrifying in its cringiness. Badly written, badly acted, terrible plot. Kids – all actors of course, chosen seemign to tick diversity boxes – set about to build telescopes… but it’s never explained how scopes work. The science, physics, engineering of a telescope, or even the history of telescopes, is left out. but oh boy, they get to decorate them! Because that’s what kids desperate for STEM want: none of that “explanation” crap, bring on the glitter! NOTE: there are none of those evil, EEEEEVIL straight white cis males among the “team” of kids. Presumably they’re on their own team. That secondary team didn’t get any screen time and probably didn’t get to decorate their scopes. They had to make do with history and math lessons, and the heartache of designing and building their own equatorial mounts.

If for some reason you want to subject yourself to the whole thing unfiltered… don’t blame me, you wanted it. Here ya go, in all its ratioed glory.

Your tax dollars at “work.”

PV put out a video yesterday showing an “FDA official” making some dumb statements. Specifically, the dude said over and over AND OVER how he wanted to use “blow darts” to vaccinate people. He said “blow dart” so many times it seemed like he must be on the payroll of Big Blow Dart and gets a commission every time he says it.

OK, fine, whatever. The video is amusing enough, I suppose, especially since the “FDA official” is sort of a particular cliche. But as far as I can tell…. he’s pretty much a nobody, an FDA “economist.” Of less direct importance than a public school teacher, someone who has daily direct contact with vulnerable and suggestible victims.

The guy getting exposed here displays a whole lot of awful, but he’s just some powerless nobody spouting off his hatred of those who disagree with him. It’s entirely possible that people in greater positions of power and influence hold similar views; it would have been better to get *them* on camera saying such vitriolic nonsense.

Still, the guy is a hateful loon. And when you have such fascistic ideas about using force and violence upon the average citizen, you should maybe consider not being such a dick. And if you *are* such a dick, and you speak with that particular…. let’s call it “soy-infused”… style, you’ve got to prepare for some blow (dart) back.

Plus, I imagine there was some of this in his life (and more to come):

Still… PV, if you want to make a real difference, stick to people of greater actual importance. Directors, elected officials, teachers, administrators. Cube-dwellers… not so much.

Gosh, as if the Biden Retreat wasn’t evidence enough of how the federal government can be kind of a mess, tonight I received an email regarding my health insurance, letting me know that I had a message that I could only read on the government website. Upon logging in to my government-mandated health insurance account, I pulled up the PDF message to read this:

That’s neat. Orwell would be proud.
