I saw a commercial a little while ago where Gropey Joe said something along the lines that he will only raise taxes on people making more than $400,000 per year. But as mentioned yesterday, he wants to make rifles and standard capacity magazines NFA items. This means that you will need to pay a tax on each one of these that you own. And that tax is $200. Per item.

Do you have an AR-15 with three magazines? That’s a $200 tax on a $500 rifle… and a $200 tax on a $12 magazine, times three. You owe the government $800. But do you also have a Glock with a half dozen magazines? That’s an extra $1200 for the magazines. Maybe you also have an AK-47 clone with a dozen mags. You now owe a further $2600. Maybe you have a Beretta with six mags. That’s another $1200. That’s an extra $5,800 you owe, just for the privilege of exercising a Constitutional right.

Maybe you’re an enthusiastic collector. You have a dozen rifles, each with forty magazines. This is not so many for someone willing to buy a gun a year, say. But you now owe the government $98,400. Otherwise it’s ten years in a Federal prison.

Biden/Harris: not even once.

Nothing to worry about at all.

Revised Statement Of U.S. Attorney Freed On Inquiry Into Reports Of Potential Issues With Mail-In Ballots

At this point we can confirm that a small number of military ballots were discarded. Investigators have recovered nine ballots at this time. Some of those ballots can be attributed to specific voters and some cannot. Of the nine ballots that were discarded and then recovered, 7 were cast for presidential candidate Donald Trump. Two of the discarded ballots had been resealed inside their appropriate envelopes by Luzerne elections staff prior to recovery by the FBI and the contents of those 2 ballots are unknown.

Sure, it’s only 9 ballots. The fact that seven of the nine – and possibly eight, and possibly nine – just happen to be for Trump? Pure random chance. Nothing to worry about. Move along, citizen, nothing to see here.

A lot of people wanted to defund the police. In cities where the police have been defunded, held back, stood down or demoralized, they’ve gotten exactly what you’d expect:

Homicide Stats Show ‘Minneapolis Effect’

Short form: less police, less policing, more crime. This is hardly surprising. This is undoubtedly what a great many of the “defund the police” crowd *wanted,* a get-out-of-jail card so that they could live out their criminal fantasies without risk of legal consequence. The statistics indicate that nationwide 710 additional murders have so far been committed, each and every one of which can be laid at the feet of the anti-police protestors and their facilitators, supporters and enablers in the media and politics.

But there are other areas of life where government spending really does need to be slashed. Behold:

D.C. Public Schools Spend $30K Per Student; Only 23% of 8th Graders Proficient in Reading

The article describes a number of states that are doing a terrible job educating their students. Such as:

The public schools in Oklahoma spent $8,935 per pupil in 2016-2017. But only 26% of eighth graders in Oklahoma public schools were proficient or better in reading, and only 26% were proficient or better in math.

Yes, Oklahoma is doing a *terrible* job. But they’re doing it at one third the cost.

In contrast, Utah is spending $8,794 per pupil and is at 38%. That still seems terrible to me, but the best of the bunch is Massachussetts, which spends $18,490 per pupil to score 45%.  What this shows is that outcome seems to be virtually wholly unconnected to spending. As such… slash the spending. Use that money for some other purpose… free one-way flights to foreign lands for those who hate the US, for instance.

There are few that these people won’t attack.

Entertainingly, the politicians who enable this sort of violence and irrational hatred make sure to use their governmental power to assure that the same thing doesn’t happen to *them*:

When you’re arguing with someone and you don’t want to listen to what they have to say, just say “reclaiming my time” and apparently they are supposed to shut up.

California State University to require ethnic or social justice classes for graduation

California State University voted to make ethnic and social justice studies a requirement for graduation amid ongoing calls for related reforms in the wake of national unrest.

The university’s Board of Trustees approved the measure on Wednesday…

The course offerings will be grounded in the traditional ethnic studies discipline, the school said, and composed of African American, Asian American, Latinx and Native American studies.

I look forward to the first lawsuit where a student demands to fulfill that requirement with a Norse or WASP studies course. But then, anyone who would prefer such a course would probably find this university not really fulfilling their educational needs. Better for a serious student to spend their dollars at a university that centers actual education rather than racist ideological indoctrination.

The June 29 meeting of the Manhattan Community Education Council District 2 meeting devolves into a straight-up struggle session, with a Mass Attack Of Karens. Fortunately, the target ain’t havin’ it.

Summary:

People have lost their damned minds. A few little people gained themselves a smidgen of power, and they promptly turn into hysterical tyrants. Fortunately, they’re caught on camera and the internet never forgets.

Sometimes people pushing a narrative for political reasons push too hard and too obviously. For instance, THIS NEWS STORY.

Ropes hanging from trees at a park in Oakland, CA,  were reported to the local authorities who determined them to be nooses, a racist threat based on a long-passed history of lynchings. The FBI has been called in to help investigate. The Mayor is up in arms.

A few small problems:

1: Locals say that they know that the ropes were actually hung there, months ago, to serve exercise and recreational purposes.

2: There are apparently videos of them being used for that purpose.

3: A guy came forward to say that *he* hung  the ropes for those purposes.

4: The guy is black.

So, in a rational world, this would be the end of it. Everyone officially involved would have a good, nervous chuckle and move on quietly, hoping that the story would quickly fade away. But then the mayor (Libby Schaaf) says this:

Schaaf said officials must “start with the assumption that these are hate crimes.” However, the mayor and Nicholas Williams, the city’s director of parks recreation, also said it didn’t matter whether the ropes were meant to send a racist message.

Intentions don’t matter when it comes to terrorizing the public,” Schaaf said. “It is incumbent on all of us to know the actual history of racial violence, of terrorism, that a noose represents and that we as a city must remove these terrorizing symbols from the public view.”

“The symbolism of the rope hanging in the tree is malicious regardless of intent. It’s evil, and it symbolizes hatred,” Williams said.

Umm. I’m kinda sure that intentions *do* matter. We’ve all heard stories about someone carrying a golf club or a camera tripod and getting reported to the police by someone with bad eyesight for brandishing a rifle; under the good Mayors reckoning that person with the tripod would *still* be charge with “disturbing the peace” or some such. Under the Mayors system, people would live in constant fear of being ratted on by paranoid nuts, idiots, malicious jokesters. Every swing in the nation would have to be taken down, every vine hanging from a tree would have to be stripped away, lest some busybody decide to get offended.

People  have been yapping on about “smart guns” for decades. Why can’t we have a pistol that only the owner can use? If we have smart phones with thumbprint readers, why can’t we have that tech in pistols? Well, there are good technological reasons… a thumb covered in sweat, dirt, oil, blood, etc. isn’t going to be conducive to 100% reliability in a device required to function 100% of the time. Wear gloves, and the thumbprint reader is right out. Similarly, devices that rely on magnetic or RFID systems built into rings, watches, surgical implants, etc. have a chance of failure or inavilability. But the biggest thing that has suppressed American firearm companies from even trying is politics. In particular, the Democrat Party of New Jersey passed a law that made it a dead certainty that nobody in their right mind would even try. An interesting (if predictably left-leaning) writeup of the issue is here:

The Smart Gun Doesn’t Exist for the Dumbest Reasons

Of course, smart guns *will* become available in due course. GIMME:
