Obamacare Strikes, and Forever 21 Cuts Employees’ Hours

In short: the company “Forever 21,” which I gather sells clothes of some sort, just turned all the 40-hour-a-week workers into 29.5-hour-per-week workers, effective August 31. Why the rather odd 29.5 hours? Because at 30 hours, the company would still have to pay into their medical, dental, vision and life insurance, but at less than 30 hours, Obamacare doesn’t make so many demands of employers.

As a bonus, not only are the former full-timers losing their medical insurance in favor of a massive new government bureaucracy, they are losing at least a quarter of their income. As a further bonus, they will no longer accrue paid time off.

Hmmm.

Reminds me of something. Didn’t someone closely associated with Obamacare once say:

“If you like your doctor, you will be able to keep your doctor, period. If you like your health care plan, you’ll be able to keep your health care plan, period. No one will take it away, no matter what.”

I have no idea what the politics of the management, staff and customers of “Forever 21” are. But looking at a few things online, they seem to cater to “fashionable” young folk. You know, the kind who voted in large numbers of Obama. The kind who thought that Obamacare was such a fantastic idea. The kind who may never know what a full-time job is.

It’s a pity nobody saw this sort of thing coming. Oh, wait, lots of people saw this sort of thing coming.

Group sets meeting to increase tolerance of Muslims, culture

Bill Killian, U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Tennessee … Killian and Moore will provide input on how civil rights can be violated by those who post inflammatory documents targeted at Muslims on social media.

“This is an educational effort with civil rights laws as they play into freedom of religion and exercising freedom of religion,” Killian told The News Monday. “This is also to inform the public what federal laws are in effect and what the consequences are.”

“Inflammatory” ain’t illegal in the US. Making it so specifically for one religious group *is* anti-American.

But then…

Leading neuroscientist: Religious fundamentalism may be a ‘mental illness’ that can be ‘cured’

This will go over well.

Regardless of your views on Obamas policies and ideology, one thing that can’t really be denied is that he was pretty much wholly unprepared to become President. A little while in the Senate  following a basically contest-free election, following a little while in the Illinois senate, characterized by voting “present” a lot, followed by no time spent in positions of business or military leadership. And now that his incompetence is coming to the fore with multiple scandals, questions are starting to be raised about whether the stress is finally getting to him.

Take, for example, this CNBC article:

An Onset of Woes Raises Questions on Obama Vision

Where we read:

Yet Mr. Obama also expresses exasperation. In private, he has talked longingly of ”going Bulworth,” a reference to a little-remembered 1998 Warren Beatty movie about a senator who risked it all to say what he really thought. … ”Probably every president says that from time to time,” said David Axelrod, another longtime adviser who has heard Mr. Obama’s movie-inspired aspiration.

Why is this of interest?  Well, here’s part of the plot description of Bullworth from Wikipedia:

Tired of politics and his life in general and planning to commit suicide, Bulworth negotiates a $10 million life insurance policy with his daughter as its beneficiary in exchange for a favorable vote from the insurance industry. Knowing that a suicide will negate his daughter’s inheritance, he contracts to have himself assassinated within two days’ time. … Bulworth happily accepts a new campaign for the presidency right before he is shot in front of a crowd of reporters and supporters by an insurance representative fearful of Bulworth’s push for single-payer health care.

A President fantasizing about emulating a suicidal movie character who supports the same policies as the real-world politician sounds juuuuust a little bit disturbing.

Back to the Moon? Not any time soon, says Bolden

Where the current NASA Administrator points out that NASA will not send another human to the moon in his lifetime.

On the one hand, the utter uselessness of NASA (not entirely their fault, of course) depresses the bejeebers out of me. On the other hand… bring on the billionaires and the private corporations. I’ll take the Weyland-Yutani Corporation over a bloated government bureaucratic monopoly any day.

Florida DJs May Face Felony for April Fools’ Water Joke

Two DJs told their listeners that dihydrogen monoxide was coming out of the water taps. People apparently panicked. Suspensions all around, with rumblings of felony charges since it’s illegal to make false water quality claims.

Ugh.

Politicians want to institute mental health screenings before allowing people to buy guns, but they won’t institute IQ tests before allowing someone to vote?

From the White House (no, really):

Presidential Proclamation — National Financial Capability Month, 2013

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
A PROCLAMATION
All Americans deserve the chance to turn their hard work into a decent living for their families and a bright future for their children. Seizing that opportunity takes more than drive and initiative — it also requires smart financial planning. During National Financial Capability Month, we recommit to empowering individuals and families with the knowledge and tools they need to get ahead in today’s economy.
My Administration is dedicated to helping people make sound decisions in the marketplace. Last year, we partnered with businesses and community leaders to roll out new public and private commitments to increasing financial literacy. We released a new financial capability toolkit to help schools and employers as they launch their own initiatives. And with our College Scorecard and Financial Aid Shopping Sheet, we are working to give families clear, transparent information on college costs so they can make good choices when they invest in higher education. Together, we can prepare young people to tackle financial challenges — from learning how to budget responsibly to saving for college, starting a business, or opening a retirement account.
Financial capability also means helping people avoid scams and demand fair treatment when they take out a mortgage, use a credit card, or apply for a student loan. My Administration continues to encourage responsibility at all levels of our financial system by cracking down on deceptive practices and ensuring that consumers are informed of their rights.
We also know that too many families are living paycheck-to-paycheck, unable to take advantage of tools that would help them plan for a middle class life. That is why we must build ladders of opportunity for everyone willing to climb them — from a fair minimum wage that lifts working Americans out of poverty to high-quality preschool and early education that gets every child on the right track early. These reforms would encourage the kind of broad-based economic growth that gives everyone a better chance to secure their financial future.
Our history shows that there is no economic engine more powerful than a thriving middle class. Reigniting that engine means giving ordinary citizens the tools to find prosperity, including strong financial capability. To learn more about managing money and navigating the 21st-century marketplace, visit www.MyMoney.gov and www.ConsumerFinance.gov, or call 1-888-MyMoney.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim April 2013 as National Financial Capability Month. I call upon all Americans to observe this month with programs and activities to improve their understanding of financial principles and practices.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this
twenty-ninth day of March, in the year of our Lord two thousand thirteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-seventh.

BARACK OBAMA

Ummm…

Popular Standard Shotgun Could Be Banned Under Proposed Bill

This Colorado bill bans any magazine that can be converted to hold more than 8 shotgun shells. But the standard tube-fed shotgun can be easily modified with an extender to hold more than 8 shells.  Thus the standard pump shotgun would be illegal.

Not mentioned in the article… there are shotgun shells of shorter than standard length, such as the 1.5 inch long Aquila minishells. Where you might get 6 standard length shotgun shells in an unmodified tube magazine, you might get 12 of the minishells in the same tube. Thus a pump shotgun that was built to *not* be extendable may very well still be illegal under this bill.

Additionally: for virtually every pistol caliber, there is a “snake shot” load readily available. So where a fifteen-round pistol magazine might at first glance appear legal under this new law, the ability to load it with snake shot would mean it would be illegal.

Additionally: you can keep your pre-ban shotgun, so long as you maintain constant possession of it. This means that if it breaks, you cannot give it to a gunsmith to fix.

I am unwilling to assume that this sort of thing is due to the gun grabbers *not* having thought things through. It seems far more likely that this is what it is… a way to ban far, far more than they claim on the surface.
