Fresh off their “Space Monkey” bait-and-switch, the Iranians are publicizing a supposed stealth fighter they’ve  built. Video here:

Iran president unveils Qaher-313 indigenous fighter jet

The thing looks like a rather sloppily assembled plywood mockup. The comments in that article are spectacular.

I can think of worse places to put the inlet, but not many. Along the trailing edges, perhaps. Inside the cockpit.

More photos here:

And a whole scad of photos collected here (you might need to sign up to see ’em, not sure):

I think the most telling photo is this one:

Q-313-4

When the pilot doesn’t even fit in the cockpit, you something’s up. Bonus: the canopy. Either they don’t want the pilots to look out and realize just how bad Iranian theocracy is, or they don’t want photographers to look in and see how embarrassed the pilots are.

In their desperation, the far-left in the media are editing tape and misinterpreting events in order to promote the false claim that gun rights supports “heckled” Neil Heslin, a father of one of the Newtown massacre victims. For example, behold MSNBC’s Larry  O’Donnell go completely bugnuts:

[youtube VwDKyPD3q3M]

And here’s Cenk Uygur (note: if you don’t know who he is, don’t feel bad. He got booted from MSNBC; he couldn’t get a real job, so went to Current TV) *massively* warping the actual events:

[youtube 4GrgjaYQeiA]

And other media:

Neil Heslin, Father Of Newtown Victim, Heckled By Pro-Gun Activists

Gun activists heckle father of child killed at Sandy Hook

Gun rights advocates heckle father of 6-year-old Newtown victim at Connecticut hearing

Father of 6-Year-Old Newtown Victim Heckled by Pro-Gun Activists

Newtown Victim’s Father Heckled by Gun Enthusiasts at Hearing

Do a Google news search for “Heslin” and “heckle,” and boy howdy will you find a *lot* of media groupthink.

Now, what *actually* happened? Heslin spoke for 15 minutes or so to a respectful silence from the audience… and repeatedly asked the audience questions. Finally, after some *direct* demands of the audience to answer questions, some did. When you ask an audience to respond, and they do, there are two things to keep in mind:

1) They’re not “heckling” if you have invited them to respond

2) If multiple unrelated people in a crowd start responding at once, you cannot expect clear oratory, but overlapping soundbites.

The full event is here:

[youtube R_wKQaWUMGE]

The man *demanded* a response, and he got about 5 seconds worth of response (from about 15:32 to 15:37 in the above video). That was enough for the media to declare “heckling.”

Hagel supports nuclear arms cuts, then elimination

Short form: Hagel supports unilateral nuclear disarmament on the part of the US, leading eventually to a totally nuclear-free US military, and somehow or other a nuke-free world. Because the Iranians would totally want to get rid of their nuclear advantage, and we could completely trust the Russians. And the Chinese.

From one of the local newspapers, the Box Elder News Journal

The right to bear arms

… the county’s top law enforcement officer, Sheriff Lynn Yeates has weighed in on the issue.
“Citizens have the right to keep and bear arms, a right that is protected by the Second Amendment and the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Department will use their full power and authority to protect citizens’ rights should the feds come to try and confiscate firearms,” said Yeates.

Neat! It’s always comforting to know that your local sheriff is actually on the side of the citizenry.

When a semi-automatic weapon is in the hands of the average law-abiding citizen, they are, so I’m told, Very Bad Things and should be gotten rid of. But when they are in the hands of government types… why, crank ’em up to full auto!

Personal Defense Weapons Solicitation

Solicitation Number: HSCEMS-12-R-00011
Agency: Department of Homeland Security
Office: Immigration & Customs Enforcement
This announcement is being placed in accordance with the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) paragraph 5.207.  It is a combined synopsis/solicitation for commercial items.  5.56x45mm NATO, select-fire firearm suitable for personal defense.  This announcement constitutes the only solicitation and proposals are being requested.  See attachments for complete details.

Huh. 5.56mm? Why, that’s the same ammo that goes into the AR-15 Murder Machine, which I’ve been informed is not appropriate for “personal defense.” And yet Homeland security seems to think that full-auto version are fantastic for self defense. Hmmm. Maybe I’ve misunderstood the rather basic info on the solicitation web page. Let’s see what the actual RFP has to say:

1.0 SCOPE

The scope of this contract is to provide a total of up to 7,000 5.56x45mm North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) personal defense weapons (PDW) throughout the life of this contract to numerous Department of Homeland Security components.

Hmmm. But surely they don’t mean the 5.56mm ammo of evil repute, that nobody goes hunting with, and which is solely used for murder?

ANSI/SAAMI Z299.4-1992: Voluntary Industry Performance Standards for Pressure & Velocity of Centerfire Rifle Sporting Ammunition for the Use of Commercial Manufacturers

“Sporting Ammunition?”

And then:

3.1 General. DHS and its components have a requirement for a 5.56x45mm NATO, select-fire firearm suitable for personal defense use in close quarters and/or when maximum concealment is required.

“Close quarters?’ But surely they don’t mean within buildings. You can’t use an AR-15 for self defense in your *house,*, it’ll blow through the wall, through the school next door and halfway through that bus full of nuns and doe-eyed orphans!

3.9.10 The action shall be capable of accepting all standard NATO STANAG 20 and 30 round M16 magazines (NSN 1005-00-921-5004) and Magpul 30 round PMAG (NSN 1005-01-576-5159).

A thirty round magazine??? As Piers Morgan would bleat, “Why do you need a 30-round clip for your murder machine?”

Surely this call for government agents to be equipped with fully automatic assault weapons must be a fluke, right? Right?

According to the Huffington Post:

(Feinstein’s gun-grab bill) exempts more than 2,200 hunting and sporting weapons; any gun manually operated by a bolt, pump, lever or slide action; any weapons used by government officials and law enforcement; and any weapons legally owned as of the date of the bill’s enactment.

Note: Diane Feinstein is a “government official.”

So… once again it’s clear: one rule of law for you, another quite different one for them.

State of NY to legal firearms owners, “Register your weapons, it’s the law.” Legal firearms owners to the State of NY, “Guns? I don’t own any guns, and you can’t prove it so go fark yourselves”

Which is in relation to this article:

Hit us with your best shot, Andy!

Which is about just what the Fark headline suggests… gun owners in New York are expected to “boycott” the state’s new anti-firearms law. I’m not really sure if “boycott” is really the right word, though. There’s got to be a better word for “refusing to go along with an unjust law.”

Sheriff Clarke: “Calling 911 and waiting is no longer your best option”

Short form: Sheriff David Clarke of the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s office released a PSA telling people that they should consider providing for their own defense, rather than planning on passivity.

Surprisingly, some people have a problem with this, including the mayor of Milwaukee, Tom Barrett, whose office released this statement: “Apparently Sheriff David Clark (sp) is auditioning for the next Dirty Harry movie.”

Besides not making any real sense whatsoever (how does a cop telling people that he *won’t* be able to be show up immediately in the event of a crime make him “Dirty Harry?”), this opened Barrett up to this from Sheriff Clarke: “Several years ago a tire iron-wielding suspect beat Mayor Tom Barrett to within inches of his life.  I would think that he would be a lot more sensitive to people being able to defend themselves in such instances.  A firearm and a plan of defense would have come in handy for him that day.”

Zing!

Gun Manufacturer Auto Policy Cancelled Because He Is In Firearm Business

“The reason for cancellation is your vehicle […] does not meet our underwriting guidelines because it is used in conjunction with a company that deals in the weapons industry“

Note that there is a dearth of hard data as yet, so there may be more to the story. It’s a little unclear what the “weapons industry” has to do with auto insurance. Apparently the former policy holder made gun parts, a perfectly legal profession. But GEICO seems to have a problem with that. Presumably they’d also have a problem if you worked at a gun shop, or repaired guns, or worked at a sporting goods store.

——————

And Reed Exhibitions, the British company that caved to craven political cowardice in banning AR-15’s and similar standard firearms from from the Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show scheduled for February 2-10 in Harrisburg, PA, has decided to postpone the whole show. This was no doubt brought on by the fact that a lot of the vendors decided to boycott the ESOS… as of today, 307 vendors, including (IIUIC) all of the big ones, have decided to bail. This is all-round bad news… lots of people have spent lots of money preparing for the show, including, no doubt, very many small family businesses and individuals. This may well cause some serious hardships. But the blame for that all falls squarely on Reed, who decided that Scary Black Guns “would distract from the theme of hunting and fishing, disrupting the broader experience of our guests,” something that apparently hasn’t been a problem in previous years.

Further: the National Shooting Sports Foundation owns the SHOT show in  Vegas, which is a ginormous gun industry trade show… managed by Reed. The NSSF is not happy with Reed’s actions with the ESOS, and it looks like they may be ending their relationship with Reed.

Because of Reed’s recent actions, NSSF is considering all options regarding the management of future SHOT Shows.

This sort of thing is not new, of course. Back in 2000 Smith & Wesson sold out to the Clinton administration, with the result that the firearms industry as a whole and firearms owners were incensed and slowed down business with S&W. At the time S&W was owned by a British company (what the hell *is* it with Brits messing with American firearms???), Tomkins PLC; the result of a 40% drop in sales led Tomkins to sell S&W in 2001 to an American company, Saf-T-Hammer. But while this was an improvement, S&W was a damaged company that had had to shut down several facilities.

The lesson: think before you decide to screw with gun owners.

Let’s face it… a gun that shoots a nuclear shell = AWESOME.

[youtube 5N0Balj2tLw]

The M65 280mm “atomic cannon” was an early 1950’s weapon designed for a single purpose: to lob 15 kiloton nuclear shells at invading Soviet forces in Germany. It was kind of a doomed concept… it was a massive piece of equipment that, while technically mobile, would in practice have been a largely fixed emplacement. Range was good by cannon standards, but terrible by “bomb carried by an airplane” standards, which is why it went away in only a few years.

It fired a live nuclear shell a grand total of once, the Upshot-Knothole-Grable test of May 25, 1953, producing some of the most impressive and iconic images from the nuclear weapons race. The shell was a gun-type bomb, similar in concept to the Little Boy bomb. This was used because the bomb was narrower in diameter than an equivalent implosion device (importance since it had to fit in an 11-inch diameter cannon shell), but it resulted in a lower performing explosive than if it were an implosion device.

Drawing of a smaller gun-type nuclear artillery shell via, of all things, Greenpeace. Apparently they got their mitts on a British nuclear weapon manual some time back, and decided that the thing to do to help prevent nuclear proliferation was to post bits of it online. Thanks!

[youtube IXCWgqBSH8Q]

This image from the Los Alamos National Lab webpage may technically not be all that impressive, but the appearance of apparently normal “stuff,” namely the power pole, lines and transformers, gives the image a creepy vibe often missing from shots of nuclear explosions.

This page HERE has a number of good photos of the cannon and its tractors, as well as selling a good PDF of AutoCAD layout drawings of the beast.
