  1. You are probably right about the bottom canopy allowing the pilot to to see the ground during final approach during landing.
    Interesting question is if the pilot seat swings through ninety degrees so that he faces toward the bottom of the aircraft, and upright during landing, like on the French SNECMA Coléoptère.
    Arguing against that is the fact that there is no reason to make a bottom window anything other than flush with the bottom of the aircraft, particularly since flipping the pilot around in such a manner would leave him around a couple of feet ahead of where he started out from in the upper cockpit, and he wouldn’t end up with his head projecting into the lower canopy, but simply looking through it at a ninety degrree angle.
