Oh, boy! Mayhem!

A Group Of 62 Catholics Has Accused The Pope Of Spreading Heresy

Not being Catholic, I have no dog in this fight. Still, it’s always entertaining when religious leaders tell other religious leaders they’re wrong. Wacky hijinks often ensue.

I was raised Catholic and always thought that the modern church’s policy on Divorce was stupid. When my Godmother got divorced the only way she was able to get an annulment through the church and remarry in the church was because her ex confessed to to going to the priest “the next freaking day” and saying he wanted to be with another woman. It’s crazy the hoops they make you jump through. Allowing divorce is just siding with modern realities. I wish they would modernize other aspects as well.

Allowing priests to be actual humans – you know, pair bonding and stuff – might improve things a tad.

I am a big proponent of that, along with female priests and other changes.

        • Scottlowther

Female priests? Doesn’t the Bible actually argue against that? Something – paraphrasing slightly – about “women should shut the hell up in church?”

Not saying womenfolk can’t do the same job of reading out of the same book, week after week, year after year, that menfolk can, just saying that I think there’s some sorta rule against it.

That was actually something I discussed with my priest when i went through confirmation. There is nothing in the bible that excludes women from being priests, hence why so many other Christian religions allow it. It is just church dogma and laws that prevent it, along with the prohibition on priests marrying.

            > There is nothing in the bible that excludes women from being priests,

            Well, there’s this:
            1 Corinthians 14:34

            New International Version
Women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the law says.

            New Living Translation
            Women
should be silent during the church meetings. It is not proper for them
to speak. They should be submissive, just as the law says.

            English Standard Version
            the
women should keep silent in the churches. For they are not permitted to
speak, but should be in submission, as the Law also says.

            Berean Study Bible
women are to be silent in the churches. They are not permitted to speak, but must be in submission, as the Law says.

            Berean Literal Bible
let the women be silent in the churches. For it is not allowed to them to speak, but to be in submission, as the Law also says.

            New American Standard Bible
            The
women are to keep silent in the churches; for they are not permitted to
speak, but are to subject themselves, just as the Law also says.

            King James Bible
Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law.

Maybe the women preachers are supposed to use sign language or something.

The Bible is often contradictory, and a lot of common practice cannot really be justified by quoting it.

Odds are that the unmarried priesthood is about administrative convenience.

          • Scottlowther

            > The Bible is often contradictory,

That’s how you create a really successful religion. One that makes clear, unambiguous claims is one that is open to falsification. And that sort of shit just don’t fly in religion. Leave that to the scienticians.

            > Odds are that the unmarried priesthood is about administrative convenience.

IIRC, it’s because the Church kept getting a series of suck-ass Popes with terrible families.

“IRC, it’s because the Church kept getting a series of suck-ass Popes with terrible families.”

Ah, so you remember the Borgias.

Don’t forget verse 35 (KJV, the only proper Bible):

[35] And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.
