The White House has a system in pl,ace to let people set up and sign petitions and, if the petition garners 100,000 signers, the White House is supposed to address the issue. One recent one that is if nothing else a little amusing is:

The next major U.S. Navy Ship should be named “USS The Deplorables”

To honor those citizens who rose up to defend America and The Constitution from the globalists.

The petition was created December 4, runs to January 3.  So far it has a whopping 6,140 signers out of the required 100,000. Kinda behind schedule…

we need a new “USS Marvin Shields” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marvin_Glenn_Shields

I’d like to see them go back to naming ships after MOH recipients. they’re worthy of it.

USS The Sullivans was odd enough.

      • allen

yeah but “the sullivans” meant something.

Yeah. the most recent equivalent was the naming of one of the new San Antonio class LSDs the USS New York – built with steel from the World Trade Center – after 9/11.

The US Navy has made an utter hash of their ship naming conventions in the last 30 years, in particular when they started throwing in politicians – especially in particular ones who didn’t have the good grace to be – ya know – dead before the ship got named. That said, I have no problems with a USS John Glenn…

      so here’s my modest proposal:

Carriers – “hero” ships of the USN. Enterprise, Wasp, Saratoga, Essex, etc. Alternatively – Presidents.
SSBNs – states, since these are the new “battleships” of the fleet.
SSNs – Fish. Thresher, Gato, Dolphin, Squalus, etc.
Cruisers – Significant battles the US has won. Alternatively – cities.
Destroyers/Frigates – American heroes, MoH or not.
Amphibious ships – Battles important to the Marine Corps, or significant Marines

Agreed in general, except I’d be happy to see “Presidents” deleted from the list. Ditch politicians entirely. There might be a *few* exceptions, such as Glenn… but instead of the USS Senator John Glenn, it’d be the USS Colonel John Glenn or USS Mission Specialist John Glenn or USS Astronaut John Glenn. Any of those mark greater achievement and value than mere “Senator.”

I could go with any new ship being named for a famous older ship of the same or similar class.

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Samuel_B._Roberts_(DE-413)
        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Original_six_frigates_of_the_United_States_Navy

so, a frigate named the USS Constellation, Chesapeake, Congress, or President would be legitimate (the USS United States really shouldn’t be a frigate..besides having a big target on it’s side the namesake of the country really should be something bigger..)
