Scientists discover an enzyme that can change a person’s blood type

It seems that this enzyme will “snip away” N-acetylgalactosamine and galactose residues that make different blood types dangerous for transfusions to people with other blood types, essentially turning the treated blood into Type O, the universal donor type.

The article does not describe if this is done *within* the donors own body, or is a treatment for already-donated blood. I’d bet on the latter.

If this works, then the supply of Type O blood can effectively be greatly increased.
