A piece of NASA presentation artwork from 1961 showing a basic design for an all-chemical-rocket design for a Nova launch vehicle. This would have been somewhat more powerful than the as-yet undesigned Saturn V; and it would have needed to be in order to carry of its mission. The Lunar Orbit Rendezvous design had not yet been chosen, and consequently the Apollo capsule and the service module both would have been landed directly on the lunar surface.
Pretty soon life’s little Twinkie gauge is gonna go empty.
Twinkie maker Hostess says may liquidate itself as workers strike
And…
Hostess Brands replies to strike announcement
“A widespread strike will cause Hostess Brands to liquidate if we are unable to produce or deliver products. If that’s the case, the company will move promptly to lay off most of its 18,300-member workforce and focus on selling its assets to the highest bidders.”
Another Union success story! So, lessee:
1) Go on strike at a bankrupt company
2) Company decides to call it a day and sell off its assets, negating all contracts
3) …
4) Profit!
I’m seeing a lot of muttering in the blogosphere about rampant voter fraud, or at least a lot of really unlikely-seeming occurrences, or things that just don’t seem to make sense. For example:
BREAKING: St. Lucie County, Florida Had 141.1% Turnout; Obama Won County
This article links to a PDF document released by the St. Lucie County elections board. The first few page have some rather startling results. Take, for instance, this line:
This seems to indicate that at the “Lakewood Park Village Hall” polling place, there were 4815 registered voters… but 6550 actual votes. Buh? This sort of thing happened at *every* polling place, resulting in an average of 141% of the registered voters voting.
But later on it gives this data:
And this:
I note that the “cards cast” number is almost exactly (but not precisely exactly) the same as the “Times Counted” number added to the “Total Votes” number. Which doesn’t make much sense to me. It looks like the “141%” turnout number is actually about twice the actual rate, but jut what the data means is obscure to me. If it’s just some weird data reduction system, it seems calculated to angry up the blood of the blogosphere.
This is about a decade old, but what the heck. It’s not like the world is overflowing with documentaries about Project Orion…

A large layout drawing of a January, 1969, North American Aviation VTOL jetliner designs under contract to NASA. Note that this has a double deck, an unusual feature for a fuselage this relatively short.

It’s easy to see the US as being on the express train to Crazytown. But Europe seems to have not only already gotten there, but set up camp:
Books portraying ‘traditional’ families could be barred
Books which portray ‘traditional’ images of mothers caring for their children or fathers going out to work could be barred from schools under proposals from Brussels.
An EU report claims that ‘gender stereotyping’ in schools influences the perception of the way boys and girls should behave and damages women’s career opportunities in the future.
Critics said the proposals for ‘study materials’ to be amended so that men and women are no longer depicted in their traditional roles would mean the withdrawal of children’s classics, such as Enid Blyton’s The Famous Five series, Paddington Bear or Peter Pan.
The longer it takes you to deal with your problems, the worse they get. Behold the result of years and years of unrealistic bennies and deficit spending:
