I wandered by the nearest Best Buytoday and talked to ’em about what would be the best computer for my CAD needs. Of what they had on hand, their suggestion was an “all-in-one” computer (basically a 23-inch monitor with all the computery goodies embedded within it, leaving just a keyboard and a mouse… no tower) with an I5 processor, 6 Gb of RAM and a graphics card of some type.

My own antique has an AMD Sempron 3000+ processor with 1.59 GHz and 1.00 BB of RAM, dating from ca. 2004. I’m a little vague on the understanding of the specifics, but it certainly sounds like the “all-in-one” would be a substantial improvement. Small problem, though: $960.

Yikes.

It would be nice to have the faster, more capable computer, and the screen is about twice the size of the one I have now. But that’s out of my budget. Can anyone who actually knows a thing or two about the needs of a CAD computer confirm that this would or would not be a good choice?

One reason – of many – I prefer cats to dogs is because you have a pretty good idea what size of critter you’re going to end up with. Raedthinn started off as a normal sized kitten, and grew up to be pretty big… but he’s still comfortably “cat sized.”

Dogs, on the other hand…

It’s a dog’s life: Owner of George, the seven foot Great Dane, lifts the lid on life with the world’s largest mutt

Huh.

Fox affiliate in Florida portrays Neo-Nazis as ‘civil rights group’

A story on MyFoxOrlando.com was posted Saturday with the headline, “Civil rights group patrolling Sanford,” referring to the National Socialist Movement.

The headline was later changed to “Neo-Nazi group patrolling Sanford,”

That’s… just… AWESOME.

Realistically… the concept of a “civil rights group” has become so muddled – what with self-promoters and hatemongers like Sharpton and Jackson somehow being seen as “civil rights leaders” – that groups as obviously non-civil-rights as the National Socialists can lay claim to the title.

This card shows an early McDonnell-Douglas design for NASP. A relatively fat lifting body design, this has many similarities to hypothetical “Aurora” hypersonic spyplane designs bandied about at the same time. This is not surprising… this NASP design is similar to any of a number of hypersonic configurations tested in NASA wind tunnels and shown publicly.

Note that the text on the back of the card describes a vehicle somewhat different than what NASP was supposed to be. The claim is made that the scramjets could power the vehicle Mach 25, orbital velocity… of they could allow the vehicle to cruise at Mach 6 for long range hypersonic transport. Early on in the program, the “Orient Express” was touted as a logical result of NASP work, but that quickly faded.

High resolution versions of these can be downloaded HERE.

Second Video Shows Brutal Gang Attack On Tourist Outside Baltimore Courthouse

While on the ground, the man was set upon by about ten attackers, who stole his Tag Heuer watch, money, iPhone, and keys to his Audi, according to police. The dazed and defenseless victim is also punched, kicked, and even hit with a shoe by several assailants. In a final indignity, the man is “teabagged” by a male attacker.

Man tells police group yelled ‘Trayvon,’ then beat him

Police are investigating the “racially motivated” beating of a 27-year-old man who was walking home from midtown bars early Saturday when he said he was jumped by five to eight men who shouted “Trayvon” before the attack.

And because, sure, why the hell not:

Trayvon Martin: UN leader calls for investigation

Navi Pillay, the U.N.’s human rights chief, has called for the organization to launch an immediate investigation into the case.

NOTE: for anyone who doesn’t get the reference of this posts title, it’s from “The Kentucky Fried Movie:”

What was funny in 1977, and based on the idea of someone intentionally seeking danger and acting stupidly, has turned into a reality. Except the Rex Kramers of today do not seem to be actual Danger Seekers, just regular schmoes minding their own business.

The Space Station V model I mastered for Fantastic Plastic is about to be released in the next month or two. I am working on a set of instructions for it, all computer rendered in the form of 2-D line drawings taken from the 3D CAD model. This is the first model I – or Fantastic Plastic – have done that has photoetched parts, in this case all the frames and longerons needed to make the “unfinished rim.” I have a suspicion that the model will look substantially awesome when completed. The pages shown below are to be printed out on 11X17 pages; this allows for full-size orthographic views, handy for getting the rims right.

The model was created in Rhino, the 2D drawing created via the “make2d” Rhino command. Distressingly, the model is at, and often beyond, the memory capability of my computer… I cannot render the space station *and* an Orion III spaceplane at the same time, for instance (“out of memory” error). Just for giggles I’d love to continue tinkering with the model, to create a more detailed version with internal details for cutaway views and the like, but that would cause my current computer to just plain roll over and die. For those knowledgable about such things, is this a matter purely of hardware, such that a new more powerful c0mputer might be able to breeze through it, or is this a software issue that would not be aided by a new computer? I have no firm plans on procuring a new computer due to fiscal concerns, but if I were to do so (anyone wanna fund a new computer? There’d be some Space Station V diagrams in it for ya…), what should I look for?
