I watched the first two episodes of Amazon’s “The Rings Of Power.” Is it as bad as feared/expected? In a word: yup. Here’s the thing, though: it is so far from Tolkein that it can’t really even be considered a bad interpretation of Tolkein. It’s just a bad fantasy series. And there have been a lot of those.

Beyond the well publicized problems of stunt casting and weird ethnicity swaps, the thing that jumped out at me the most was just how badly interpreted the elves are. The elves of the books and reasonably so of the movies are freakin’ *unearthly.* They are shaped like humans, but they are unrealistically beautiful; the light of the moon and especially the stars seems to fall on them at all times. They are *above* mankind. They are a different order of being. But in Rings of Power? They’re just a random assortment of actors with pointy ears. Many of whom have not just short hair – rather than the long hair elves were well known for – but actual buzz cuts. They are the same height as the bog-standard humans they occasionally stand next to. They might be fantasy elves…  but they’re sure as hell not Tolkein elves. Given the billion dollars Amazon spent on this, they can’t claim poverty when explaining why they skimped out on these factors, especially since they *did* go to the bother of showing a “Harfoot” (a Hobbit stand-in species that is short like Hobbits, has large Hobbit feet, but otherwise don’t seem to be very much like Hobbits, which is fine because Hobbits haven;t evolved yet by this time in Middle Earth history) next to someone who will probably turn out to be Gandalf or Saruman (though, again, the wizards are centuries away from showing up in Middle Earth).

The whole thing is a weird mix of high production values – in particular the renderings of environments such as elvish and dwarvish cities – and low-effort CW-level acting and especially writing. It is, essentially, quite forgettable in the sort of way that Star Trek Discovery is enraging. I’ll probably end up watching the other episodes at some point, but likely mostly as background noise. I won’t be hate watching the series like modern horrible Star Trek. I don’t know if it’s because RoP is so far off the mark, or if it’s because so many franchises have been so badly mauled lately that I’m just kinda burned out.

I’ve heard this speech before. Last time, it was in German.

Anyone who disagrees with him and his senile policies is evil and stupid. Even better: burning down businesses and killing people in the streets for political purposes? Not worth mentioning. Milling about the halls of power? Oooh, that there threatens the very bedrock of democracy.

This was not a campaign speech. This was a call for violence.

Huh.

Utica Sculpture Residency Vandals Are Under the Age of 11, Police Say

Five Mostly Peaceful Vandals aged 8 to 11 pretty effectively trashed an upstate New York art… place. Workship. Studio. Collective. Whatever. The photos in that and an earlier article make it clear these little monsters were on a mission of destruction. The artists have set up a “gofundme” type thing to help rebuild, with a goal of $75,000. Seems to me the kids families should be the immediate go-to for reimbursement. According to the funding campaign, damage includes:

  • All windows, interior and exterior, have been smashed
  • The entire office along with accompanying communication and computer equipment, important archival documents and information, and furniture have been severely damaged and destroyed
  • The entire kitchen, kitchenware, and equipment were smashed and spread throughout the studio area
  • The bathrooms and hallway were flooded and damaged
  • Several donated art pieces for CHAIRity have been partially damaged or completely destroyed
  • Furniture and storage units throughout were destroyed or rendered useless
  • Camera and video technologies have been smashed and destroyed
  • Lighting was busted or smashed
  • Multiple bicycles for use by artists-in-residence were stolen

Kids these days. I look forward to the exciting and innovative excuses that will be made for them.

I know a lot of modern art sucks and often resembles actual garbage more than art, but come on.

In “Jaws,” the Sheriff takes out the shark by shooting a SCUBA tank with an M-1 Garand. The tank, clenched in the sharks jaws, kerplodes and shreds the Shark. Many years later Mythbusters tried to do the same thing, with the result that nothing much happened: holes were poked in the tank and it quickly blew down, but didn’t explode. Myth busted.

But then… GunTuber Edwin Sarkissian put an oxygen tank in a safe and shot through them with a .50 BMG rifle. The results were energetic and nearly Kentucky Ballistics in their effect. “Put a thumb in it” would not have been sufficient.

Not entirely relevant: restoration of a Pakistani home-made Kalashnikov 12-gauge shotgun, left in a wall for a number of years and rusted badly. Back when I lived in a free state I had a 12-gauge AK, and it was fun as hell to shoot… but you couldn’t pay me enough to pull the trigger on this thing.

Project Veritas had an enlightening hidden-camera chat with a public school assistant principal. In it he describes how to go about making sure that conservative employee candidates are rejected on the basis of their politics, how Democrat/progressive politics are injected into the classroom, how religious discrimination is normalized. It should be interesting to see if he maintains his employment. The chances that he’s alone in his practices is essentially zero, so expect that someone like this may well be at work in *your* school district.

Only one murder so far!

Dancing revellers crash through a bus stop ROOF near Notting Hill Carnival as partygoers enjoy first event in two years since Covid – while police arrest 38 people including two for sexual assault

How long until Britain is just a fading memory among people in far-flung lands?
