When a semi-automatic weapon is in the hands of the average law-abiding citizen, they are, so I’m told, Very Bad Things and should be gotten rid of. But when they are in the hands of government types… why, crank ’em up to full auto!

Personal Defense Weapons Solicitation

Solicitation Number: HSCEMS-12-R-00011
Agency: Department of Homeland Security
Office: Immigration & Customs Enforcement
This announcement is being placed in accordance with the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) paragraph 5.207.  It is a combined synopsis/solicitation for commercial items.  5.56x45mm NATO, select-fire firearm suitable for personal defense.  This announcement constitutes the only solicitation and proposals are being requested.  See attachments for complete details.

Huh. 5.56mm? Why, that’s the same ammo that goes into the AR-15 Murder Machine, which I’ve been informed is not appropriate for “personal defense.” And yet Homeland security seems to think that full-auto version are fantastic for self defense. Hmmm. Maybe I’ve misunderstood the rather basic info on the solicitation web page. Let’s see what the actual RFP has to say:

1.0 SCOPE

The scope of this contract is to provide a total of up to 7,000 5.56x45mm North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) personal defense weapons (PDW) throughout the life of this contract to numerous Department of Homeland Security components.

Hmmm. But surely they don’t mean the 5.56mm ammo of evil repute, that nobody goes hunting with, and which is solely used for murder?

ANSI/SAAMI Z299.4-1992: Voluntary Industry Performance Standards for Pressure & Velocity of Centerfire Rifle Sporting Ammunition for the Use of Commercial Manufacturers

“Sporting Ammunition?”

And then:

3.1 General. DHS and its components have a requirement for a 5.56x45mm NATO, select-fire firearm suitable for personal defense use in close quarters and/or when maximum concealment is required.

“Close quarters?’ But surely they don’t mean within buildings. You can’t use an AR-15 for self defense in your *house,*, it’ll blow through the wall, through the school next door and halfway through that bus full of nuns and doe-eyed orphans!

3.9.10 The action shall be capable of accepting all standard NATO STANAG 20 and 30 round M16 magazines (NSN 1005-00-921-5004) and Magpul 30 round PMAG (NSN 1005-01-576-5159).

A thirty round magazine??? As Piers Morgan would bleat, “Why do you need a 30-round clip for your murder machine?”

Surely this call for government agents to be equipped with fully automatic assault weapons must be a fluke, right? Right?

According to the Huffington Post:

(Feinstein’s gun-grab bill) exempts more than 2,200 hunting and sporting weapons; any gun manually operated by a bolt, pump, lever or slide action; any weapons used by government officials and law enforcement; and any weapons legally owned as of the date of the bill’s enactment.

Note: Diane Feinstein is a “government official.”

So… once again it’s clear: one rule of law for you, another quite different one for them.

State of NY to legal firearms owners, “Register your weapons, it’s the law.” Legal firearms owners to the State of NY, “Guns? I don’t own any guns, and you can’t prove it so go fark yourselves”

Which is in relation to this article:

Hit us with your best shot, Andy!

Which is about just what the Fark headline suggests… gun owners in New York are expected to “boycott” the state’s new anti-firearms law. I’m not really sure if “boycott” is really the right word, though. There’s got to be a better word for “refusing to go along with an unjust law.”

Sheriff Clarke: “Calling 911 and waiting is no longer your best option”

Short form: Sheriff David Clarke of the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s office released a PSA telling people that they should consider providing for their own defense, rather than planning on passivity.

Surprisingly, some people have a problem with this, including the mayor of Milwaukee, Tom Barrett, whose office released this statement: “Apparently Sheriff David Clark (sp) is auditioning for the next Dirty Harry movie.”

Besides not making any real sense whatsoever (how does a cop telling people that he *won’t* be able to be show up immediately in the event of a crime make him “Dirty Harry?”), this opened Barrett up to this from Sheriff Clarke: “Several years ago a tire iron-wielding suspect beat Mayor Tom Barrett to within inches of his life.  I would think that he would be a lot more sensitive to people being able to defend themselves in such instances.  A firearm and a plan of defense would have come in handy for him that day.”

Zing!

It has been a long time since mail was a common item of dress. However, I think if I had to go to New York in the future, I’d look into getting some mail, perhaps incorporated into a long coat. Why? Well, it’d be heavy, and would thus make for a decent workout. Plus, it’d be handy if someone tried to stab me. But most importantly: to annoy the New York police state.

NYPD Commissioner says department will begin testing  a new high-tech device that scans for concealed weapons

The NYPD is procuring some nice expensive scanners that can apparently “see” concealed weapons. The description in the article is a bit fuzzy… it claims that “people and inanimate objects” emit terahertz radiation, which concealed guns would block, and would thus be visible to the scanner. But regardless of how it works, a metal mesh – such as a mail jacket – would seem likely to well and truly mess with the scanning system. Not to mention metal detectors, of course.

It’s irritating enough to be under a microscope at an airport, which at least has the excuse of being private property. But out on the street? Bah. Seems a 4th Amendment issue.

I’m not alone in this, either…

From the Japan Times:

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Taro Aso caused a stir Monday in talks on social security reforms when he said the medical system should be changed so that the many terminal patients now using “government money” for expensive treatment “can quickly pass away.”

This was a personal statement, not a government position (apparently), but unpleasant as it sounds, it seems pretty much inevitable… and more or less sensible. If you are being kept alive on someone else’s money, and the money runs out, it’s not at all clear to me that there are really many options.

A market-driven system where patients pay for their own treatment would lead to competing companies trying to produce increasingly inexpensive and powerful treatments, in order to get your money. With a single-payer system, there’s little drive to innovate for improvement, and none at all to reduce cost in techniques and technologies. So cost must be saved by simply rationing care and pulling plugs.

Massachusetts State Representative David Linsky has proffered a bill that would, and I quote:

Section 3

Removes Assault Weapon Ban loophole by banning private transfer of pre-1994 assault weapon; requires them to be stored at gun clubs or shooting ranges, or transferred to law enforcement.

There is of course much more. But I found this bit to be especially historic.

The Windber Medical Center in Windber, Pennsylvania, used to deliver about 200 babies per yer. No longer… they’re getting out of the birthin’ business. Guess why.

Southwestern Pa. hospital to stop baby deliveries

I’m shocked, SHOCKED to find that bureaucratic bloat and governmental overreach have unintended consequences that result in the polar opposite of what was claimed!

I’ve thought the White House petition thing was silly from the get-go. But the timing on this makes me wonder if someone at the White House just doesn’t want to deal with it anymore.

Why We’re Raising the Signature Threshold for We the People

In short, yesterday the administration raised the threshold from 25,000 to 100,000 for the number of signers a petition would have before the President would deign to respond. Why yesterday? Hmmm…

A few moments ago:

However, this one got grandfathered in…

Starting today, as we move into a second term, petitions must receive 100,000 signatures in 30 days in order to receive an official response from the Obama Administration. This new threshold applies only to petitions created from this point forward and is not retroactively applied to ones that already exist.

I look forward to whatever bland non-responsive response they come up with for this. Given how relatively few petitions make it to 25K, I doubt many will make it to 100k.

Rep. Israel to Introduce Legislation to Prohibit 3-D Printed High-Capacity Magazines Along with Plastic Guns

Washington, D.C.— Today, Congressman Steve Israel (D-Huntington [New York]) called for a renewal of a revamped Undetectable Firearms Act that includes the ban of 3-D printed, plastic high-capacity magazines. The existing ban on plastic guns expires this year and does not clearly cover magazines. This past weekend, Defense Distributed, a group of homemade gun enthusiasts used a 3-D printer to print and test an ammunition magazine for an AR semi-automatic rifle, loading and firing 86 rounds from the 30-round clip.

The only way to control this would be to control 3D printers… and to control the Internet. Hang on to your shorts, kiddies…
