Something people should keep in mind when they think of Putin as anything other than a Soviet thug:

Putin: Soviet collapse a ‘genuine tragedy’

In a speech way back in 2005, he said:

“First and foremost it is worth acknowledging that the demise of the Soviet Union was the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the century,” Putin said. “As for the Russian people, it became a genuine tragedy. Tens of millions of our fellow citizens and countrymen found themselves beyond the fringes of Russian territory”

Yeah, the well-deserved and long overdue end of the Soviet Union caused chaos for the Russian people. But to declare it as the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the century is really saying something. He’s saying that the loss of power and prestige of the USSR was worse than:

1) The Russian loss in WWI

2) The Bolshevik Revolution

3) The extermination of the Kulaks

4) The Holodomor

5) the gulag system

6) Dozens of millions of Russians/Soviets getting wiped out in WWII

7) The Russian mess in Afghanistan

8) Chernobyl

9) Friggen’ *Communism*

All of those are less “catastrophic” than, say, Latvia and Ukraine and Estonia getting to live out from under the Kremlins thumb in Putin’s view. Any wonder he’s launched a world-threatening genocidal war?

And in ironic claims that did not age well:

In an apparent response to foreign allegations that Russia has been backtracking on democracy, Putin said Russia’s main political task was to develop as a free, democratic nation with European ideals. He stressed that individual freedoms would not be compromised by strengthening the state.

Mikhail Gorbachev, who ended the Cold War, dies aged 91 -agencies

There will be a number of glowing hagiographies shortly describing him in positive terms because he saw the peaceful end of the Soviet Union through “openness” and by not sending the tanks to crush the various smaller Communist countries when they split from the Soviet Union. But the thing to never, EVER forget: he was a Communist. His policies weren’t intended to see Estonia and Latvia and East Germany gain their freedom; those were unintended consequences. His plan was not for the Soviet Union to go away without firing a shot; his goal was to perpetuate the USSR and Communism for all time. His goal was not the end of the Cold War with the West left standing, but the conquest of the  world and total subjugation to Communism. He was just kind of incompetent *and* not a complete monster. So, yes, he wasn’t the worst Communist. Kind of like how Admiral Doernitz wasn’t the worst Nazi. But a Nazi is still a Nazi, a Commie is still a Commie, even if they smile at you while planning on erasing your family from existence.

So a Russian feller reviews the replacement for McDonalds. It’s sort of Uncanny Valley McDonalds… everything is *like* McDonalds, but a little off. There weird thing (to me, anyway) is the lack of fries. I always kinda thought that Russians had taters in vast abundance? Where’s their vodka come from? And $14 seems kinda pricey.

It seems a little strange to me to think of McDonalds as some kind of “experience,” to look back fondly on the “soul” and “love” of McDonalds. But I guess McDonalds emerging at the end of Communism must have been a heck of a thing, and to go back to the smile-free Soviet Experience must be a bummer.

The Conflict Between The West And Russia Is A Religious One

The war currently underway in Ukraine, which pits Ukraine as a proxy for the collective West against Russia, is primarily an ideological or religious one, with Russia representing what is left of Christian Europe, and “the West” representing a totalitarian ideology that abhors religion in general and Christianity in particular.

Ummm. Color me stunned, he goes on to implicate Da Jooooz.

Westerners – especially those who style themselves “conservatives” – who think that Putin is anything but a KGB  thug baffle me.

This time, though, I’m not irritated. Commie art is good for one thing: recycling. Like fascist and SJW artwork, it’s at best soulless and devoted to the very worst things and people. So the Lativans took down the “Moscow Liberators” monument, in large part to protest the Moscow invasion of Ukraine.

In a now-deleted tweet, Russian diplomat Mikhail Ulyanov kinda lets the cat out of the bag regarding the Kremlins intentions towards the civilian population of Ukraine. In later tweets he claims he’s being taken out of context…. but the dude’s a PROFESSIONAL DIPLOMAT.

When a political actor who wants to hurt you SAYS they want to hurt you…. believe them when they blurt stuff out before they have a chance to really think over their wording.

It seems the Russians are dropping air-burst incendiary weapons onto Ukraine, videos linked below. This is certainly visually impressive and doubtless monumentally intimidating… but damned if the engineer in me doesn’t wonder about how incredibly inefficient this seems to be. I mean… it looks like a *lot* of the WP magnesium is burning up while still in the sky. What’s you’d want is for it to burn in the *ground,* where it could do some damage. Clearly a lot of it is making it to the ground, but every bit that combusts Up There is that much less to do actual damage Down Here. Clearly these sort of weapons need to be set off somewhere above the ground for maximum area effect, but these seem to be getting set off way too high. I’m fuzzy on the legality of using incendiary weapons like this against civilian areas. I know it was a popular pastime during World War Two, but it was my understanding that the rules have changed a bit since then. But then, invading a sovereign nation in order to annex their territory is *also* supposed to be disallowed, and yet here we are.

UPDATE: more vids

Yeah, it’s visually damned impressive. It just seems like a *lot* of the incendiary potential is getting wasted. Which, under the circumstances, is a good thing, since these seem to be attempts to turn neighborhoods into firestorms.
