So this afternoon I went out to get groceries. I stopped at a gas station on my way home, about 5 miles from home. After having heard a weather report, I checked the cars thermometer… 75 degrees.  Nice warm day. Five miles later as I pulled in the driveway… 60 degrees. Within an hour… snow.

By tomorrow I expect nitrogen to rain out of the sky.

For some reason, my neighbor dumped a couple truckloads of onions in his field for his sheep critter to nom upon. I first noticed this one day a week or two back when, going into my garage, I was hit with the overwhelming smell of onions. As my garage is not normally the sort of place that encompasses a great many culinary smells, my first thought was “oh, no, what horrible chemical disaster has occurred to my home and/or car that has resulted in the co-incidental odor?” And then the garage door opened and, behold, a field of onions.

And for those interested… living for a decade next to a field full of sheep, an overwhelming scent of onions is *far* from the worst stank to come from that direction.

Next week, March 11, ATK will do a static test fire of the QM-1 rocket motor. This is a five-segment derivative of the 4-segment Shuttle RSRM solid rocket booster. This past evening (March 5) ATK held an open house for the local community to come and take a close up look at the motor, and to get information about environmental concerns about the test (there are none, but there was someone who went bonkers a few years back…). I attended and took a number of photos of the motor and other stuff. This was one of those cases where it would have been better to get *more distance* from the subject; but you make do with what ya got.

I’ve made a bunch of these available at full resolution to APR Patreon patrons.

February is now FIRE TIME out here in the west. I can remember a time when fires were reserved for summer… but the environment *and* the people have decided, ah, screw it, let’s torch the joint. The past few days have seen a number of farm fires, and I heard about at least one wildfire on the radio news. Such as:

And on the way home from some travels today, I saw smoke rising from not-far-from-my-house, which is always an attention getter:

Upon getting closer (this was just a mile or so down the road from my house) this turned out to be a field fire… and a stack of *big* tractor tires merrily burning away. I don’t know if this was intentional or the field fire got away from ’em:

Very shortly after I got home a fire truck went scooting by, so, what the hell, I followed.
