Saw this today on the road to Logan. Only got one dismal photo with the camera phone.

If you can’t make out what it is… on far left is a cat. At far right, atop the hay bale, is a very large hawk. The cat was trying to sneak up on the hawk. As it happened, the hawk flew off just after this photo was taken; the cat immediately dashed for the tall grass. But no good could have possibly come from a cat taking on a raptor that size.

I’ve seen this vehicle bopping around from time to time, but this morning was the first time I’ve seen it stopped where I could get some photos of it. I have no doubt it’s a bit of a gas guzzler, but it does look like a fun family vehicle.

I went up to Logan today and briefly visited the one shopping mall in town. It has been some months since I was last there; in the intervening time, one of the generic mall-stores (I think it was a “Dillards”) closed up shop. But rather than being left empty, or replaced by another generic mall store (like a Nordstroms or some such), the Cal Ranch store that used to be situated across the parking lot moved in. So now, at long last, there is a shopping mall with a store that will sell you ammunition, pistols, shotguns and AR-15s. Ha!

And in other news sure to instill rage and fear into the civilian disarmament proponents:

Concealed-gun law takes effect in Maine

Mainers no longer need permit to carry concealed handguns

Today I stopped at one of the gas stations on the way to Logan to get some chicken (why a gas station? Because their chicken is friggen’ awesome, that’s why) and saw this vehicle in the parking lot. The lack of doors was a modest attention getter, but what really attracted my attention was what was left just sitting in it. There are three things visible here that might be of interest.

I suspect this sort of thing wouldn’t be seen too often in less civilized regions like New York City or LA.

Had some interesting weather out here last several days. Nothing like the gullywashers I grew up with in Illinois, but any rain at all in early September is a bit unusual for this region… and it has led to some picturesque skies.

Oddly enough, I’m not referring to the circa 1960 Ballistic Missile Boost Intercept (BAMBI) concept for orbital anti-ICBM weapons the USAF studied. But, instead, these critters I saw roadside a few weeks back:

A panorama taken from up the hills to the west looking toward Tremonton and the Walls of Mordor (i.e. the Wasatch Mountains). This was from June, before the clean, pure, highly environmentally regulated air of California arrived and mucked up the view. Now, the mountains are wholly invisible.
