Two F-111’s in flight over the sort of unimproved, rough, muddy, horrible little airstrips they were sold as being perfectly able to fly from on a regular basis.

  1. They almost look like they have the short F-111B Navy-style radomes on them.

  2. Also note the shorter wingspan and Navy gull grey with white undersides color scheme.

These planes look like the first edition of the 1/72 scale Revell model kit which had parts for both versions and some over eager young lad put USAF decals on a USN bird.

  3. The Navy F-111B had the long wings that ended up on the FB-111 and later F-111 variants.
I figured out what’s going on; the painting is based on a photo of a USAF F-111 prototype, which did have the gray/white color scheme and a smaller-looking radome: http://www.aerofiles.com/gendym-f111a.jpg
I’d forgotten just how short the Navy F-111B radome was to give the crew a better view during landing: http://img508.imageshack.us/f/f111xt6.jpg/
