My father suffers from back pain. A friend of his does as well, and has to take meds to control it. One day without meds, he happened to try one of those “5 Hour Energy” drinks, and his pain went away for some time. Told my father about it; he tried it, and it worked for him as well.  I haven’t a clue as to what would cause this, but this anecdotal evidence may be of some value to some people. I’ve tried the stuff myself in recent days, as I’m getting sicker’n hell with something that produces whopping great headaches, fatigue and joint pain; so far I can’t claim any great pain relief from it, but is *seems* to *maybe* help a little. Doesn’t get me amped up any, though it has reduced the fatigue.

There don’t seem to be any particularly nasty ingredients or side effects, so if you’ve got pain, give it a shot. YMMV.

  1. Seems to have a bunch of B complex vitamins. Don’t know about B, but I know that vitamin D is associated with pain transmission. If you don’t have enough vitamin D one effect is that your tolerance for pain goes down.

It might be worth trying an over the counter B suppliment to see if that helps. If it works it’s probaby cheaper than buying cases of energy drinks.

Of course the best treatment for back pain is lots and lots of sit-ups.

  2. had simelar problem
    killer headaches, fatigue and tendonitis
after my family gave me advice to take Iron or minerals
i got pills with A to Z stuff on vitamins, mineral and trace elements.
    and feel much better now.

  3. Do you have Lyme disease out there? The symptoms are similar — might want to consider that.

  4. I am such a satisfied customer that I will forever tout the benefits of http://www.easychairworkstation.com/

I can work for many hours, expending only the energy required to type and to raise a can of Mountain Dew to my lips.

  5. Time to cull the herd.

  6. > Do you have Lyme disease out there?

  7. Yea, Scott, those symptoms match up the lyme or Babesiosis, and Babesiosis is listed as being on west coast, so you might want to consider getting checked. It is a beeatch, though not fatal.

  8. Whopping great headaches, fatigue and joint pain = almost certainly influenza. See your doctor.

  9. Ditto on Lyme or it’s Western equivalent. My sister has Lyme. Let’s just say it’s something to avoid if at all possible.

  10. I’ll second the Vitamin D remark. It used to be thought of as just a calcium thing, but in the last couple of decades it’s been discovered that it has a big role in the immune system, too. The quantities recommended are also much larger: around 4000 IU/day.

  11. Or just down around a gallon of coffee, as all those “Miracle Energy Pills” rely on sticking as much caffeine into you as is legally possible.
Oh, well… at least that’s better than the old days – when they would do it by filling you up with a big dose of amphetamines. 😀

  12. Now, let’s get a few things straight here;.
Getting Lyme Disease, unlike getting Malaria, isn’t a life-long problem, any more than getting West Nile Virus is.
…and if you do get it, vitamin supplements aren’t going to be able to cure it.
I know a black woman who claimed she had “Sickle-Cell Anemia” that only manifested itself when there was any sort of manual labor to be done.
For the life of me, I can’t figure out why those to my political right are:
    1. Complete hypochondriacs.
    2. Who attempt to solve their health problems by using some form of alternative treatment rather than going to a licensed MD and using the prescribed drugs he recommends.
When I figure this “Great Mystery” out, I will be making a great step towards understanding humanity in general. 😀

  13. I have chronic back pain and just drank a 5 hour energy not knowing it can help with pain. Now my back pain is gone! I don’t know why it would help with pain but I haven’t taken any pain med today and feel great.
