Another CAD-based model. This one is a bit of a hair-puller, so the final CAD model will be substantially unfinished… with a lot of blending and surface work to be done by hand. The end result should nevertheless be quite good.

UPDATE: Note that the gun mounting system is designed to permit full posing, at least in the buildup stage. Given the small size of the final parts, though, I’m not sure if this will be fully practical. But I figured it was better to err on the side of doing it right the first time.

UPDATE:

Just about there. Need to flesh out the gear bays & doors and build the inlets right behind the canopy, and that’s pretty much it.

  1. OK, you stumped me. I have no idea what that is…

  2. I’d have to say it’s a SA-43 Endo / Exo Atmospheric Attack Jet from Space: Above and Beyond.

    Looking good!

  3. Scott, what software do you use to produce this?

  4. Rhino 3D.

  5. yeah, that’s the Hammerhead all right.

  6. maybe this illustrations from Georg Jörgens help you to refine the hammerhead:

  7. Those are nice, but not terribly accurate. I’m working off of a series of semi-orthogonals (orthogonal views, but unfortunately with a fair amount of perspective) and isometrics produced off of the actual “filming model.” Which of course differs from the full-scale mockup…

I’d’a rather worked off of the actual “filming model” itself, but what’re’ya gonna do…

  8. […]  Anyway, I’ve managed to be somewhat productive today. Check out the latest updates HERE. […]

  9. When you say ‘filming model’, do you mean there was an actual physical model of the Hammerhead, or are you thinking of the original Lightwave 3D objects? I know the effects work for the show was done in Lightwave 3D… The show was on the air around the time I was nearing my high school graduation, and the company that did the CGI work was based here in Albuquerque, NM; at the time I was entertaining thoughts of pursuing a career in computer graphics and animation, and I remember visiting their shop and getting the ‘tour’, being shown their workstations and some of the models and animations in Lightwave. I wonder if someone who was involved in the project would still have the original .lwo objects… I suppose they’re probably property of the TV network or something.

  10. > or are you thinking of the original Lightwave 3D objects?

That. There were two versions of the Hammerhead… the CG model and the full-scale mockup. There were some pretty substantial differences between the two.

    > I wonder if someone who was involved in the project would still have the original .lwo objects…

Yes. A few years ago some feller posted a number of (relatively) high-rez renderings using the original model.

  11. This model is going to be “printed” and finished in 1/72 scale, and probably 1/144 as well. I’d bet that this would look pretty snazzy in larger scales, like 1/35, 1/32, 1/24 or even 1/18.
