From the Mail Online:

A seven-month-old baby girl survived three days alone with a bullet in her chest beside the bodies of her parents and toddler brother.

Argentines Francisco Lotero, 56, and Miriam Coletti, 23, shot their children before killing themselves after making an apparent suicide pact over fears about global warming.

Their son Francisco, two, died instantly after being hit in the back.

Jeez. I’ve heard some lameass crazytalk attemptign to explain suicides before, but fears of global warming is a new champion in the field of gibberish.

  1. Actually, in the scale of human history, this is not that uncommon. Peoples gripped by an overwhelming sense of impending doom, mostly created by religious fanaticism, have killed their children and themselves on many occasions. Hell. Remember Hale Bopp? Usually these things are restricted to groups, but the odd family group will do it, too. Several cases of this related to financial problems were in the press during the last months. One in Virginia, and one in Connecticut, and I think two in Cali.

The real eyepopper here is the girl surviving a pointblank pistol shot to the chest, for 3 days, unattended. Shock and blood loss alone should have done for her. That child has a purpose.

  2. > this is not that uncommon … Usually these things are restricted to groups …

This time, though, the religious fanatacism is beign whipped up by Well Respected Government Officials.

  3. … And then there are the reports of suicides of Avatar fans. (Are they really doing that?)

I don’t find this at all surprising.

I wondered, when Obama was elected, whether the uncertainty over what he’d really do was enough to push some of them over the edge. Maybe I was right about this one.

  4. It doesn’t much trouble me the decisions grown adults make for themselves, but if they mess up (or bring to an untimely end) the lives of children theirs or otherwise, then they’re doing it all wrong. Gee whiz, they could at least have had the decency to take the kids to social services first, then drive into the bridge abutment. (Shoot themselves) (Jump) (etc)

  5. Ok perhaps that lacked a little context. I am sympathetic if someone has experienced something which puts they in a state that they’d consider suicide. I am particularly sympathetic for the daughter in this case, because it will be nearly impossible for she to understand why her parents did what they did, and she’ll have to live with their impulsiveness her whole life.

  6. >she’ll have to live with their impulsiveness her whole life.

Maybe, maybe not. Being three months old, she’s not going to remember it. If she’s adopted out, she may never hear the story, and the scar might either be explained away via “accident” or “surgery” or “birthmark,” or it might even disappear entirely.

Normally I’m an “all the facts” kinda guy, but in some cases it’s best if the story is, well, lacking some of the facts.

  7. > they could at least have had the decency to take the kids to social services first…

You just… don’t… get it, do ya, Jim. See, the world is going to warm up by One Whole Degree during the lifetime of those kids. Sea levels may rise by a foot or more! Life simply wouldn’t be worth living in such circumstances. The parents were doing the kids a favor by sparing them the unending horror of a climate that the Earth has experienced throughout most of the term of life on Earth.

  8. Almost equally nuts are these women, who won’t have children because “it’s selfish to maintain your genetic line at the expense of the planet”

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-495495/Meet-women-wont-babies–theyre-eco-friendly.html

Milton Friedman once said (I think it was in Freedom to Choose) that there was an obvious solution to the fact that humans emit carbon dioxide, but it was obviously not an option. Not to these loonies. I’ve said before that at its most fundamental level, selfishness is the desire to live. These women prove my point rather eloquently.

  9. Scott, too true! Then again, this sort of thing is always whipped up by “Well Respected Government Officials.” be they former US Vice Presidents, government paid scientists, or the local holyman. There is a component in many, many humans which graves disaster, turmoil and destruction. There is also a component in many, MANY humans to blindly follow without thinking, ie Socialism/Communism and assorted and sundry dictators.(see Zimbabwe)

  10. Yep, that’s what happens when nuts have guns…

  11. Speaking of lunacy in Zimbabwe

It’s astonishing that Obama is actually extending the sactions implemented on Mugabe by Bush; you’d think after spending 20 years talking to Wright, that Mugabe’d be just his type

  12. If those “Avatards” can’t distinguish that AVATAR was just a movie and not real, then frankly they deserve all the discomfort of suicide. I laugh at others’ stupidity.

  13. Sometimes I hate your blog. Some things just can’t be unread…..

    Stoopid Monkeys.

As the man said… “You watched it…. you can’t UN-watch it!”

  15. Blap? Dr Gordy prescribes Tequila, 5000cc, STAT!! It won’t erase it, but it will drive it out of your consciousness for awhile.
