The BBC website has an autoplay video covering a recent “Flat Earth Society” convention in North Carolina. It certainly seems to have been better attended than it should have been. But the perpetual question about flat-Earthers is: how many of them are actual believer, how many of them are there as a lark, how many of them are outright pretending to believe? Flat Earth is such a patently ludicrous notion that it seems like it would be reasonable to suggest that most people who claim to buy into it really don’t. But then you look at the vast spectrum of stupid that humans glom onto with a passion and… yeah, I suppose there really can be that many people who actually think the Earth is a flat disk.

Why do people still think the Earth is flat?

As with most conspiracy theories, I doubt that most true believing Flat Earthers could be logicked or evidenced out of their belief. And the harder you try, the harder they’ll dig in their heels. It provides them a sense of wonder coupled with a sense of “I’m one of the *special* people because I know *The* *Truth.*” Such a feeling cannot be reliably countered with “No, you’re not.”

Everyone knows the Earth isn’t flat, its hollow.

…and we live on the inside.

Honesty how can you blame them?

Think about it: Most of us have never been to Space, and images and video are not hard to doctor

And consider this: People have every right to be critical of what the mainstream says. We heard every single major media outlet last year say Trump had a less than 2% chance of winning.

We have had both major parties in our government say “throwing more money at the Education system will improve scores and overall intelligence levels, it’s just that the other side just isn’t doing it right!” and look at how well that theory has worked out in the last half century.

And how many times does the FDA approve a drug and 6 months later goes “oopsies, sorry about that, all you hundreds of people who are now dead from side effects that we could have known about had we just tested this drug just a little bit more before giving it approval”

So when the people running your government and media and academia are constantly shown to be idiots, frauds or liars, is it any wonder that people can come to the conclusion that the Earth is flat?

Yes, it is. Because the spherocity of Earth is something you can test for *yourself,* several different ways. Go north and south, see how the noon sun changes in its angle. Fly from Argentina to Australia and see if the distance lines up with the distance you’d fly on a globe, or the *vast* distance you’d fly on a flat Earth. Look at the shadow of earth crossing the Moon during a lunar eclipse: is it a rhomboid or an ellipse (indicating a “flat” world of some type), or is it *always* a circle no matter the elevation of the moon, indicating that the Earth is a sphere? And if you travel south far enough to see the southern celestial pole… all of a sudden you’re looking at a geometrically *impossible* second rotational axis for the supposed dome of fixed stars overhead.

Alternatively: go buy some territory on the edge of the world. The view must be *fantastic.*

But you aren’t aware of it, because space is warped more and more the farther you are from the Only Pole. Your body elongates, and the aircraft also elongates, along one dimension. It works that way in Special Relativity, too, only with velocity.

It’s the same principle that causes your friends to shrink in size, the farther away from you they walk — and they aren’t aware of it!

The International Space Station flies a complicated orbit, one that needs a lot of math to be accurately described in Flat Earth Physics. But astronauts document the warp, which makes the Flat Earth appear to be spherical, when they photograph the Earth from space.

This was NOT NOT NOT hosted or in any way affiliated with the Flat Earth Society. FES is a joke organization whose members don’t actually believe that the Earth is flat.
