From the Salem News:

The driver of a minivan who was seriously injured when she was struck head-on by a drag-racing teenager doing 81 mph is now being sued by the teenager’s passenger, who was also injured.

Wait. There were two cars here. One had two teenagers, and it was speeding (81 mph in a 30 mph zone), lost control and veered intooncoming traffic. The father of the passenger in this speeding car is sueing the driver of the car that was *not* breaking the law. And what does the scumbag lawyer who’s facilitating this travesty have to say?

Hughes defended the filing of the lawsuit yesterday, saying it’s his obligation to recover as much as possible in damages for his client. The complaint lists $350,000 in medical bills to date and another $100,000 in anticipated expenses.

“Basically, under Massachusetts law I’m trying to get compensation for my client anywhere I can,” Hughes said yesterday.

The US needs not only a “loser pays” system when it comes to lawsuits, but more specifically a “loser’s *lawyer* pays” system.

  1. I do believe I’m in total agreement with you Scott…

  2. Oh, yea. That there Shakespeare feller was SOOOO right.

  3. So this guy walks into a bar, has a couple of drinks and starts rambling about losing his job, getting a divorce, etc. At one point he says “… every lawyer is an asshole!” A voice comes from the back of the bar: “Sir, I take offense to that!” The guy asks: “Why? Are you a lawyer?” “No, I’m an asshole!”

  4. Well, one advantage of trial by combat is that it greatly cut down on frivolous lawsuits. Perhaps a middle ground? Losing lawyer gets flogged?
