While the title of the post can certainly apply  to the recent long-awaited and half century+ overdue demise of a certain Cuban dictator, it actually refers to an unexpected little tragedy out here in rural Utah tonight, where I got to sit at the side of the road in the cold for half an hour, seeing off a cat I’ve never met before*. That little critter did *not* want to go, and damn did she fight… but the two cars who hit her – including the one that hit her AS I WAS TRYING TO RESCUE HER FROM THE FRIKKEN ROAD, had other ideas.

So, yeah. Tonight has utterly sucked.

*Nobody should have to die alone in the cold and the dark.

You have a good soul Scott. I’m sad to hear you had to go through that but glad that little soul did not have to depart without someone there to console it.

Scott, your compassion for small animals shows that you have the soul of a giant. Your kindness is a beacon of goodness in a world that all to often glorifies nastiness and petty self interest. You make the world a better place just by being here. Bless you.

    • Scottlowther

Thanks. But you may be laying it on a bit thick… I’m no Hollywood celeb or politician who needs an ego stroking. I was just a sad/angry guy who needed to vent slightly.

Compassion for small critters like cats should not be some remarkable thing. That little critter suffered, and made sounds I’ll never be able to dig out of my head. Anybody who might’ve seen/heard that and *didn’t* recognize that there was an *individual* capable of the same fear and pain that a human can feel… that person would be an idiot. Three weeks ago facebook and youtube and the like were filled with the wails of SJWs and such upset about an election not going their way… I’ve been doing them one better tonight, and for much “better” reason. But I’ll be damned if I’ll film myself wailing, much less post that crap online.

There was nothing anybody could have done for that cat after the second car. Maybe the first might have been survivable… but the second, with me mere *feet* away, sealed her fate. All I could have done would be to speed things along, but I didn’t have anything to make that happen. Nothing I could have brought myself to use, anyway. If I’d known she would hang on as long as she did, I might’ve done something.

Out here in the sticks the sight of a cat, a skunk, a racoon dead on or next to the road is not that rare. Skunks and raccoons I pass with little notice, but cats…. that always bugs the hell out of me. Cats, like dogs and perhaps horses, are ON OUR TEAM. And yet most people bypass a dead one with no thought whatsoever. Would people zoom past or over a smooshed toddler with the same sense of “meh?” I’m not saying that cats are on the same level as humans younglings, but damn, to be so utterly forgotten and ignored tears me the hell up.

      • Herp McDerp

Cats, like dogs and perhaps horses, are ON OUR TEAM.

That’s it exactly. And anyone who’s lived with a dog or cat knows they aren’t just “meat machines” — they may not be deep thinkers, but there’s somebody home in there. And we owe it to them to make sure they don’t suffer.

        • Scottlowther

There’s somebody home in felines, canids, corvids, racoons, raptors (birds, not dinos), cetaceans, rats, others. From what I’ve seen, the house is pretty empty and running on automatic in sheep, cows, rabbits. The dividing line seems to be “does it hunt?” If not… then chances are real good that there’s no *there* there, because “personality” is not a property that evolves alongside “topped out at learning how to sneak up on a leaf.”

And thus vegans… well, hard to argue that they are fully evolved sentient beings. More like propaganda spouting machines.

Such a deed renders you a noble soul in my book. Thank you man.

  • sferrin

God, that sucks. The worst part is the helplessness of not being able to help them.

  • I’ve been there in that exact position with a cat…it well and truly sucks.

  • Jon Risque

I’m so sorry to hear that Scott, it brought back memories when I ran over my cat that I rescued from being run over on a four lane when she was just a kitten… its the worst feeling in the world…

    • Scottlowther

      That sounds… awful.

There was a news story around here some months ago (a couple years, maybe?) where someone backed out of their drive and squished their toddler. One might imagine that that might feel a bit worse, but I dunno… I’ve met toddlers. I’ve yet to meet a cat that I wouldn’t prefer to just about any toddler.

  • Jeff Moon

Tru;y you have more compassion than most Scott!

    • Scottlowther

When you consider the fact that I’m a heartless mean-spirited bitter asshole… that really doesn’t speak well for humanity as a whole.

  • Nemo

Others have already said it, so I’ll just join the chorus. It’s good to know that their are still H.M-S.B.A.s out there who’ll take the cold and dark when someone needs to.

    • Scottlowther

      ???
      “Hawthorne Middle School Business Acadamy?”
” Hangesti Murih Santosaning Bebrayan Agung?”
      “hydroxy-methoxy-sulfonic acid-benzyl alcohol?”

      Google just wasn’t that helpful.

      • Nemo

Heh heh . . . sorry, “heartless mean-spirited bitter asshole.” I’d just read it and it was fresh in my mind.

Plus, it describes me pretty well.

        • Scottlowther

Ah. Using my own words, in acronym form. Pretty sneaky, sis.

          • Nemo

Saves wear on the keyboard, too.
