Arglebargle!

Remember That Time Emma Watson Was the Face of a Skin-Lightening Product?

Where we are told in no uncertain terms that products that lighten your skin are supporting white supremacy, are a form of colonialism, etc.

Oddly no mention of skin *darkening* products or treatments. You know, like tanning beds. Or spray-on tans. Or tanning creams. Or promoting natural tanning via damaging your skin with UV exposure from excessive sunlight, ramping up your cancer risk.

Gah…Jezebel…no great hive of villainy and faux outrage exists….

and not surprisingly part of the Gawker underbelly of internet “journalism”.

If life really made any sense–lighter skin should be what sub-Saharan groups would need–a higher albedo to reflect sunlight–with Europeans having darker skin to absorb more of the Sun’s ways to keep warm.

Then too–you really need a barrier for softer tissues–thus the current state of affairs.

Evolution just didn’t find a way to have sunblock that was also reflective.

I would imagine that somewhere in the universe there’s an ecosystem that learned how to add magnesium, zinc or aluminum oxides to the epidermis, for that blindingly white Joker look.

Of course they blame it on colonialism, and when you get right down to it, on white men did the colonizing, amirite? The trouble is, few men give a shit how white a woman’s skin is — look at all the Asian war brides after World War II, Korea, and Viet Nam. (And there would have been even more after Afghanistan and Iraq if the women and their families hadn’t had peculiar and often lethal ideas about cross-cultural relationships.)

Women indulge in fashions and cosmetics because they’re competing with other women based on what they think men want … or in the case of lesbians, they’re trying to look good for other women.

So once again, at Jezebel we have a bunch of women pissing and moaning about how oppressed they are based on what they choose to do to themselves. It gets a bit old after a while.
