Why It Was Easier to Be Skinny in the 1980s

Some studies have shown that if similar people today and in the mid 1980s ate the same and exercised the same, the people from today would still be fatter than their predecessors. Theorized explanations include the changes in artificial sweeteners and other dietary chemicals, the increased use of antidepressants and the like, a higher percentage of meat in the diet, changes in gut biota.

Translation: I dunno.

It’s based on BMI….so if weightlifters gain more muscle than people 30 years ago, this study would consider them “fatter”. Maybe supplements or training methods are better now ¯_(ツ)_/¯ ? Or IT’S THE HORMONES IN OUR FOOD!! (j/k)

Food science doesn’t have a very good track record. Any comparison between peoples weight now and 30 years ago would have to take into account the dietary effects of smoking – which a large percent of the population engaged in and reduces appetite and subsequently caloric intake.

Hey uh, I just tried to get to the blog a moment ago and I was redirected to a wordpress admin page asking to make passwords and stuff.

If uh, that’s a problem you might want to fix that.

    • Scottlowther

That could be one of at least two things:
      1) A mystery blip that occurs from time to time and doesn’t seem to amount to anything, as you’d need to be able to sign in with passwords and such to get anywhere
      2) A precursor to the same damn thing that happened a month or two back that took down the blog for the better part of a week due to a poorly explained massive problem.

I’m hoping it’s #1. Did it ask you what nation/language you wanted to use?

      • Nick P.

Sure did, had a little captcha box and everything.

        • Scottlowther

          Well. Shit.

I guess I’d expect to see the blog go down again in the near future.
