Say “howdy” to this nightmarish cosmic horror I encountered a day or three back. Abdomen about 5/8″ diameter.

Apart from looking a bit hairier, it looks surprisingly like the garden spiders here in England, even down to the size.

Of course, I haven’t looked as closely at them as those Macro shots, so I can’t be certain about the hairs…

They certainly make walking under overhanging branches into something of a gauntlet for arachnophobics this time of year…

    Nice photography!

I frankly don’t understand the ewwwww response that some people have to spiders, reptiles, and other “creepy-crawlies.” Sure, I’m wary about handling critters that might be venomous, but their forms represent elegant engineering solutions to problems presented by their lifestyles.

It makes me wonder how we’re going to react if and when we ever encounter aliens. (In that vein, did you ever read A Deepness in the Sky, with its sympathetic spiderlike aliens and several rather loathsome humans?)

So does a Guillotine or refined ricin, but that doesn’t mean I want to play with ’em.

Spiders have bad PR in that they have recognizable structures (legs, eyes, hair, etc.) but in the wrong numbers and proportions.

Looks like a face-hugger to me.

When I took my first university-level biology course, I suggested that all bugs and bug-like things were survivors of a Great Extinction. Somehow, they had gotten through it but the main direction of evolution went on to be what we see today. Bugs fit into a set of niches that would have been filled by thumbnail-sized birds and the like. Richard Dawkins’ summary of human evolution,.”The Ancestor’s Tale”, does not include any Arthropoda.but I admit other of our ancestors are also the things of nightmares.

A fresh can of Lysol and a grill lighter, please.

Well it does seem to fit in with what does look like a feline face image on it’s body
