And no, it’s not a P-38.

  1. the Hughes XF-11 ?

  2. Nope.

  3. Is this a Lockheed L-106?
A variant of XP-49 Chain Lightning wiht radial engines.

  4. The Hughes D-2

  5. Nope, and nope.

  6. You’re playing safe…. :-))

  7. Giving its design, so closer to the P-38/D-2 family, could be an American aircraft.
But, the same design betray some Russian features.
Could it be a Grokhovsky derivative designed to mach the P-38?

  8. Looks like a really early P-61 sketch.

  9. I would hazard a guess that its an early design for the Grumman F7F. It has Grumman type ‘paper clip’ wing fold break lines.

  10. What about the Grumman G-25 naval high altitude fighter with twin engines?

  11. It’s looks big so probably it’s not a fighter.
Large wings for high altitude or long distance flights.
Looks like a 30’s design. A reccon aircraft for operations over the Pacific. Or could it be a record/research aircraft.

  12. Well, it’s large, and got large wings, so probably high altitude and they were probably hoping it would be quite fast.

  13. Lockheed L-106?

  14. Nobody’s gotten it yet…

  15. The tails look a bit ‘Republic’ to me – is it a precursor of the Rainbow?

  16. Ok, let’s try again: is this a Hall/Rhodes late ’30s design for a Bell long range fighter/recon proposal??

  17. one moment
next to P-38 was another Twin boom prroposal:

    the Vultee XP1015 ?

  18. ist this Vultee XP 1015 ?

  19. Nope to all again.

OK, unless someone figures it out by, oh, Monday evening, I’ll post the description.

  20. Boy, you don’t know the time I spent trying to track that SOB down…I’m really keen on finding out what it is.

  21. BTW, when I was trying to track it down, I stumbled on this great website:
    http://cmeunier.chez-alice.fr/index.htm
Which has tons of stuff on it for free download.

  22. Pat, you stumbled in Tophe’s (Xavier Toff…) work…. If you are not already there, join us at The Secret Projects Forum (www.secretprojects.co.uk). Tophe is there, too, with another load of forked ghosts…

  23. No markings nor colours, elevator in it could be an
    ‘advertisement aircraft’…

  24. No markings nor colours, elevator half way down..
it could be an’advertisement aircraft’ for aeronautical products…

  25. Lockheed Model 822

  26. There are a lot more twin-boom aircraft designs out there than I would have ever imagined.

  27. Still nope. And for the record, it’s a *real* aircraft project, not artistic blather. Some detailed drawings and data were produced.

  28. Is it the Lockheed bid for the 1937 USN requirement for a high altitude carrier based fighter. Was a P-38 derivative but powered by two R-1535s. Which was a competitor to the Grumman G-25. I don’t know the model number but, however most definitely not the Model 822 (later wartime carrier P-38 derivative).

  29. Lockheed Model 24?

  30. The previously unknown American radar loiterer for the defence of London.
It has big wings and a big nose for radar.

    Could be Northrop.

  31. Hughes XP73/ XA-37

  32. […] first “Unwanted Blog Identify This Aircraft Contest” to go without a winner had the June, 1943, design for a tanker aircraft by Consolidated […]

  33. QED

  34. Now I understand why the elevator was a bit down..

  35. Vultee XP1015
