Stumbled across an interesting webpage, one documenting the abandoned equipment used to fight the reactor fire. Give it a look.

Another page from the same site shows a number of photos of the city of Chernobyl.

  1. I personally visited the Chernobyl area for two days in June 2006 with a friend who is a former resident of Pripyat. We toured the Chernobyl Plant (including the Reactor 4 control room), several of the abandoned villages, and Pripyat. I have posted a photo journal of my trip at:

My Journey to Chernobyl: 20 Years After the Disaster

  2. Are you sure this is a dump for radioactive vehicles? Its just that someone has gone through the vehicles and raided them for engines and spare parts just like any other scrap heap. Would not seem to be a smart thing to do if they are all scorching…

  3. I find the disaster at Chernobyl strangely fascinating. It’s interesting to see how much stuff will deteriorate after such little time without maintenance.

  4. It is indeed a “cemetery” for radioactive vehicles. People have been sneaking into the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone for years stealing anything of value. Some people have been arrested and convicted for stealing scrap metal from the Zone.

Last year, some thieves were caught stealing a helicopter from the Chernobyl Zone to use as a cafe.

There are even people who sneak into the Zone and poach wildlife, including
    government officials.

You need to understand the economic situation in Ukraine to realize this type of activity is not a surprise.
