At the same time that some of us have a heightened sense that the US FedGuv is *not* doing the sort of forward thinking, society-advancing stuff that it should, such as conquering the universe, it is actually paying people to produce baldercrap like this:

State Department: ‘Hold down the fort,’ other common phrases could be offensive

“Rule of thumb” is also verbotten.

We live in such a ridiculous world in which anyone can get offended over harmless, basically meaningless statements.

What next: getting offended if someone calls you by your given name?

Can’t the State Department spend a few dollars to find out these terms they have deemed offensive aren’t actually offensive at all but are part of modern culture?

Does this mean that we are going to have to change entire languages because certain phrases and words offend someone? Maybe that’s why French is no longer the language of diplomacy.

Who’d have imagined it? The State Department being well, diplomatic, just amazing…

Who’d have imagined it? A bureaucrat at the State Department being, well, embarrassingly ignorant, pompous, and overbearing, just amazing…

You appear to have a problem with people being diplomatic, particularly when that is, afterall their job or have you forgotten the function of the State Department?

          > You appear to have a problem with people being diplomatic

          Stop being racist.

The function of the State Department is to represent the interests of the United States of America, not to avoid offending the sensibilities of people who have their heads wedged into their rectal cavities. By the way, one task included in that function is to deliver declarations of war, an act that the recipients often take to be highly offensive. You appear to have a problem with distinguishing between someone being diplomatic and someone being embarrassingly ignorant, pompous, and overbearing … and factually wrong, as with the case of condemning the phrase “rule of thumb.”

I would suggest it is yourself who appear unable or unwilling to accept that diplomacy extends into the personal sphere as well as the international. The State Department is meant to be couching its language in a manner that indeed does not give unnecessary offence to other nations. Of course, it could just blunder around like a bull in a china shop, rather in the style you have adopted but obviously in order for its staff to be professional in what they do, it’s director has decided otherwise.

Why exactly should the US FedGov go out and conquer the universe? They should stop blocking the doorway and leave it for Caltech or Id Software or Make Magazine to go out and conquer the universe.

It will be interesting to see what the origins of the phrases might be. Given the last few decades of absurd misconceptions from government, I see no reason to believe he’s accurate on any point.

And “rule of thumb,” he wrote, can according to women’s activists refer “to an antiquated law, whereby the width of a husband’s thumb was the legal size of a switch or rod allowed to beat his wife.”

Except that was never the definition until a couple of feminist screeds in the 70s. Rule of thumb has always refered to using a thumb as a ruler for an aproximate measurement.

Interesting is *where* this “antiquated law” came from. It’s from a particular religious tradition. Guess which one. Go on, guess.

We need guides like this. Now that the RACIST Republicans have finished their RACIST convention, we have to be on the lookout for their RACIST ads during their RACIST campaign that contain their RACIST lies so that we can identify the RACIST RACISM of the RACIST Republican candidates RACIST ROMNEY and RACIST RYAN. Most people just don’t understand how RACIST these RACISTS are.
