  1. Ill omens of things to come? Now, if a really big comet shows up…
How would you like to have been inside of it when that was happening?
Time for some “Ten Ton Epoxy” or “Super-Duper Glue”.
Still, we’ve had to rebuild it before:

That was a very fun movie; between that and “Forbidden Planet” we kids all knew what flying saucers looked like. 🙂

  2. METAPHOR ALERT!

  3. Metaphor is right. Usually, one would expect cracks in a monument to occur at its foundation.

Not here—for the cracks in the monument are to be found…at the very top.
Read whatever into that you like…

The one two punch of the ‘quake and the hurricane reminded me of this short story by Lord Dunsany

Proving that baseball is the most…cosmic…of sports–in the lull between disasters, the Yanquis hit three grand slams. Also Spooky… http://www.bautforum.com/archive/index.php/t-95913.html

  4. Since it’s tapered, it might focus vibrations at the top, the way a bull whip speeds up as it thins.
Also, the rock it’s made out of is no doubt a lot thinner at the top than the bottom, so might crack more easily.
When it was made, they capped it with a small pyramid of the most expensive metal known at the time – aluminum.
