Disney/Pixar have “John Carter” coming out in 2012. Taken from the Burroughs novels, this is Pixars first live action flick. There is a very brief glimpse of Tars Tarkas; and of course, the first question to be asked by anyone who has read any of the books is “Why ain’t Dejah Thoris nekkid???”

And who here has *not* played the game “Battleship?” Probably very few. Who here has played “Battleship” and thought, “You know, what the world desperately needs is a major motion picture based on this game, which sets up modern naval ships against alien spacecraft”? Well… probably a slightly smaller fraction.

  1. John Carter looks like it has potential to be pretty good (even without the nudity…) but Battleship.

Yikes, that idea has sounded dumb since I first heard about it, but I kept an open mind until the trailer came out. Now I know, still not a good idea.

  2. See the nice Martian flying machines with 50 foot long bird feathers on them?

    1. Annoying point – Barsoom has no birds with feathers anywhere near that large; malagors probably have a total wingspan of around 50 feet, making their largest feathers around what? Five feet long?: http://barsoom.wikia.com/wiki/Malagor

    2. Really major point – Flying machines on Barsoom don’t have wings, as they are supported by antigravity generated by a ray, not lift from airfoils. They were supposed to look more like flying ships than aircraft: http://www.erblist.com/abg/technology.html
(think Jabba’s sand yacht and the small flying skiff shown with it… also think Leia’s costume, which had Frazetta’s JCOM paintings written all over it.)

    3. Yeah…right – Yes, John Carter can jump pretty well in the low Martian gravity; however to get him to jump as high as shown in the trailer, he would have to have been able to jump around 20 feet in the air on Earth.

Next, I expect to see a few other “improvements ” Disney has made on the story, like the smart-ass talking Calot, and the wise old talking Thoat that’s always putting it in its place.

  3. Well, the answer to your first question is that R-rated movies do very poorly at the box office.

  4. as Burroughs write “A Princes of Mars” was in year 1917
in that time the word “Naked” had another meaning: to clothe sparse [like a primitive]
but wat you expect from a time, were exposure of woman ankle is consider as “obscene”…

  5. Still waiting for someone to make Ender’s Game.

  6. Battleship….

    1. Looks better than Pearl Harbor

    2. Here’s an antidote, there’s only one seagoing battleship that fights aliens. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9N0Mf3M7io8
