My favorite airplane of all time. If I were rich, I’d start a company and build updated versions of the F-86 (sans weapons, of course) for the sport market. I’d love to fly in one…
Some people do own and fly private ex-military ones; the aircraft was simple enough that maintenance won’t kill you.
Got to see a real rarity a couple of years ago, a privately owned Navy Fury, their version of the Saber, came to an airshow in our town. It’s actually slightly more streamlined looking than the Saber.
I still remember how basically you could know the time frame of the animated adventure “The Iron Giant”
which is about a boy who somehow becomes a friend to an alien robot from another planet and the military is out to get the robot which F-86s are featured.
I thought it was okay looking, but was nowhere near as aesthetically pleasing as say a Hawker Hunter or Grumman Cougar though.
The F-86 sure beat the original AJ-1 Fury for looks though: http://blog.usni.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/fj1-fury.jpeg
What’s the grid-pattern stuff on the tailpipe – insulation?

Yes they go faster now, and do lots of gee-whiz things, but I hold this as a high point of elegant design.
