An early NASA sketch for a 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft. Note that it is essentially what actually got built, except for:

1) It doesn’t have the vertical stabilizers on the tips of the tailfins

2) It has aerodynamic fairings over the aft Shuttle supports
