I’ve only rarely heard the Emergency Broadcast System used for anything but tests (a few times it was used for weather alerts, such as tornados). It has never been used for what it was really meant for… telling people that the nukes were on their way. But it seems it was accidentally used for just that, in 1971. An interesting tale:
