My internet connection out here in the boonies is always kinda creaky. But I’ve noticed that it has slowed to a crawl of late… download speeds of a blistering 7 kilobytes per second being not that unusual. Yesterday I was sent a link to a file of nearly a gigabyte; I tried downloading it, but hours later it had essentially stopped, far short of the goal. This morning I happened to wake up at 4AM and tried downloading again… and it worked fine. Download speeds were between 130 and 230 kb/sec. Still far short of those “megabytes/second” that’re advertised, but far faster than usual.

So what would cause download speeds to vary *that* much? Bandwidth piracy, perhaps (way the hell out *here*?)? Something at the communications company?
