Model’s hand sliced off when she walks into plane’s propeller, suffered head and brain injuries

Wow.

Yet another tragedy that could have been averted if she’d only watched “Raiders of the Lost Ark.”

Or maybe just realized that walking into the giant swinging blade might not be a good thing. You’d think that sort of thing would be self-evident…

I am for some reason reminded of Robert Heinlein: “Stupidity cannot be cured with money, or through education, or by legislation. Stupidity is not a sin, the victim can’t help being stupid. But stupidity is the only universal capital crime; the sentence is death, there is no appeal, and execution is carried out automatically and without pity.”

  1. Here’s one for the Darwin awards. Let’s hope she never has children. What’s happened to COMMON SENSE?

    • You only get the Darwin award if your stupidity actually kills you or renders you unable to reproduce (on rare occasions, people have lived through the actions that qualified them for the Darwin award). This girl is unfortunately only eligible for an honorary mention.

  2. I take it this was a privately owned aircraft?
I find it inconceivable that any commercial air service doesn’t ensure that passengers aren’t allowed to disembark until the aircraft has come to a full stop, including the propellers. You can’t trust the public to not do stupid things around your expensive equipment, so it’s better to make sure they can’t do any damage.

And I find the lack of empathy displayed in public discourse these days to be disturbing. The correct response is “oh, that poor woman. stupid git.”

    • >And I find the lack of empathy displayed in public discourse these days to be disturbing.

“These days?” Things are hardly different than they ever were.

As for a lack of empathy… sympathy means you feel *for* the victim, empathy means that you feel *with* the victim. Sympathy requires imagination; empathy requires *memory.* So… how many people are they who can empathize with walking into a set of giant swinging swords?

Even so, there are millions of human tragedies per day. Can’t feel bad for all of ’em; the sheer magnitude would crush a human mind. So, a loved one stubbing a toe means more than a village going up in flames on the other side of the planet. Thus, the only really practical response to distant tragedies that don’t directly affect you and yours is to see them as object lessons.

    • What’s disturbing is that anyone could have empathy for the girl. What’s even more disturbing than that is that this girl actually survived her childhood to be hurt in this accident.

No, no… the most disturbing thing is the lack of COMMON SENSE. Not the fact she was born, but that she had really no inborn survival instinct to protect her (COMMON SENSE).

I have what I call a healthy aversion to spinning metal blades. She needed to have that, too!

  3. We’re just trying to figure out the logistics of this, if she really was on her way to thank the pilot (as her parents say) why was she out of the plane, and how the heck did she get in front of the prop, especially one spinning fast enough to do that much damage.

  4. I don’t see any photos of the aircraft or a description beyond “small”. There are some small aircraft where you could walk past a propeller to talk to the pilot through a window. But only an utter fool would try it with the propeller still spinning.

  5. Another arguement for pusher props–but it also helps to have something between your windshiled and errant hailstones or birds–also to help with lift at lower speeds…
