One of the reasons why my “Nuclear Pulse propulsion” book is taking so long is because there are a boatload of drawings needing doing, and some of them are seriously troublesome. Take, for example, the “Messiah” from the movie Deep Impact. Below shows the current status of the 2-D layout drawings I’ve been tinkering with. As well as the book, these will probably serve as the basis of of a scale model.

  1. How are you going about putting this one together? Just making estimates based on what’s seen on screen in the movie, or have you been able to get in touch with the prop makers?

    • Mostly using photos (taken by others, sadly) of some of the models, which were put on display at ILM a few years back.

  2. I suppose the rump shuttle nose was meant to be some type of lifeboat.
My biggest complaint with Hollywood is that they insist on depicting strap-on booster components as pieces-parts in orbit. If someone showed ET or stretched Ariane wet-core stages in orbit, that would be less troubling. The Bekuo concept–a NEP design–looked like an Energiya core block surrounded by side mount payload pods placed around it, perhaps fitting in the strap-on connection points.

The Messiah looked to have SRB and Energiya/Zenit based strap-ons as part of its structure…
