I finally got around to stitching together photos I’ve taken since October. I’ll be posting some reduced-rez versions over the next little while, because why not. If anything is interesting, let me know. The dates the photos were taken are in the filenames.

Looking south near Brigham City.

A couple sunset shots from Thatcher, Utah.

Late last night the power went out during a mild rain shower. Turns out a power pole caught fire and trashed the transformer and such, cutting things off for most of the night. Fortunately the temperature was not an issue and most everybody was asleep, but having a house full of uninterruptible power supplies suddenly all beeping incessantly was  a pain in the keister. But the situation did lead to some interesting sights, straight out of Project Blue Book: a few miles off, a few police vehicles with flashing lights along with a utility truck pointing spotlights up at the pole while the workers fixed it. The lights were reflected not only by the mist in the air, but also the low-hanging clouds.

For over a week now there have been a *lot* of helicopters heading north-west, passing almost directly over my house in Thatcher, Utah. They have been flying at all hours (just saw one at 10 PM; a few nights ago one went by at 4 AM), and there seems to be a variety of helicopters (a trio of AH-64’s a few days ago). There’s really nothing in that direction except perhaps Twin Falls, Idaho, 120 miles from here. The choppers *seem* to perhaps be heading a bit south of a twin falls heading, but that’s kind of a massive guess. Presumably they’re coming from the Brigham City Airport, but where are they going?

Some sort of cold/flu thing has knocked me on my keister for the last week or so, peaking in awfulness yesterday morning/the night before. *Hopefully* it’s in the declining-awfulness phase, but in any event it has ruined not only my productiveness but also put a damper on the higher functions. Been sorts running on neutral for a few days. So *this* is what it must be like being an NPC…

Anyway, in lieu of my usual scintillating prose, here are some random photos of no particular worth.

Footprints in the snow.

Yesterday I crawled to a vertical attitude and drove to town to get some food. The local Shopko seems to be getting an early start on holidays *months* away.

It’s always a little bit of a shock when, well after nightfall, you get a call from one of your neighbors telling you to “look out your window,” you do, and the house across the street is a raging inferno.

As it turns out this was a planned burn. The house was a dump; it hasn’t been lived in since before I moved out here in 2004. Still, it came as just a smidgen of a surprise. The wind was blowing like mad, sending smoke and embers across the street over my neighbors house. Fortunately the firefighters were right there (they had, after all, started the fire).

Currently one of the big local news story is the mystery around a couple videos that *seem* to show an arch and hoodoos – reportedly in Utah – being blown up. So far nobody has confirmed that these have actually occurred; many think that these videos are the result of computer imagery. The idea that CGI would mess with the ability to tell real news from fake has been raised before… now, here it is, front and center.

Maybe these are Utah geological features being destroyed. Maybe these are CGI. And maybe they are *Chinese* features being destroyed, and simply called Utah. Hmmm. If they are actual Utah-based crimes, then presumably this will be confirmed in relatively short order because arches and hoodoos are reasonably well known and documented. If these are Utah-based features being photo-manipulated to *appear* to be destroyed, then that, too, should soon be made clear. However, if these features are from the Gobi desert or even wholly fictional, this may remain a permanent mystery.

Utah agencies investigating after videos purportedly show destruction of arch formation, hoodoos

Note that in the video of the hoodoo being destroyed someone gives a countdown. The accent is distinctly non-American (sounds like Dracula to me…). This may indicate a foreigner in the US. or it may indicate that this occurred out of the US. or it may indicate that a voice was simply overlaid over the video. Or it may indicate a thousand other things.
