Convair NX-2 by Scott Lowther with drawings by Joy Richards

Span: 133.9 feet

The NX-2 was a design for a subsonic bomber that had nuclear powered turbojet engines. Artwork and photos of display models have been shown often, but rarely have there been drawings of any worth. Finally, after 40 years... some Really Good and more importantly *accurate* drawings of the Convair NX-2. Three-views of four versions, inboard top and side views, plus all available dimensional and performance data.

Spacejet

Length: 257.5 feet

GTOW: 2595klbs

In the late 1970's and early 1980's, NASA-Langley and Boeing studied the use of flyback boosters for spaceplanes... the boosters being little more than turbojet engine pods with wings and gas tanks. The concept was known as "Spacejet." A wide range of designs were examined... everything from knockoffs of then-current SSTO designs, to wholly-new scramjet equipped spaceplanes and down to stretched Space Shuttle orbiters. Payload ranged from as little as 10,000 pounds to more than 60,000 pounds. This article presents a number of three-views of NASA and Boeing designs, as well as detailed views of the final Boeing concept.

High Speed Rotorcraft, Part 1

The first of two parts on a NASA design competition held in 1991 examining the future of vertical takeoff and landing vehicles to fulfill varied missiosn from attack to passenger transport. This article covers the Sikorsky and Bell entries. Ten separate aircraft designs are presented... tiltrotor, tilwing and fan-in-body designs. Three views for all, interior views for most. The designs illustrated here are two of the Sikorsky designs... a variable diameter tiltrotor scout-attack and a shrouded rotor scout attack. Lengths overall were 42.2 and 45.4 feet, respectively.
